RMW Tune

I have a stock 2010 R56 MCS. How do I make this RMW tune happen, who do I contact? Info on anyone else that has done the tune? Results?

Thanks

I had the tune done on a stock 2010 MCS. Results are impressive. I got a 22 hp gain just from the canned tune. When Jan got to work his magic on the dyno, I got a full 30 hp gain, with everything else bone stock. But the numbers don't tell it all ... the real difference is what your butt feels when you mash the gas.

awesome, thanks everyone. After purchasing everything, is it really DIY or would it be best to take all the stuff to a shop to get worked on?

No it is very simple. Just follow the directions for loading the software onto your home computer or laptop and the flash tool. From there it is simply hooking the cable up and transferring the tune to your mini. Good luck and enjoy!

It needs to be noted that although a remote tune is fine in most cases, a tuning session done live with a dynomometer is really the most effective way to increase performance. As any tuner will tell you, all cars are built differently, and not all canned tunes work equally well even for "identical" cars.

I cannot recommend more strongly that you should try to get your tune done in person with a professional tuner such as Jan or the other performance tuners that work on MINIs.

.....AGREED! I am happy with the improvement but I know it can be refined on a dyno for better performance. So far the closest dyno session with Jan is a one way 15 hour drive for me. I may have to do it though for my own piece of mind....

Would it be necessary to purchase the flash tool? Or if i took it to a shop where i knew someone that could work on it for me, would they need it. Is it for purchase so one can do the tune themselves? Just wondering before I order and end up only needing to buy the tune.

I think if you're going to do the canned or remote tune then yeah, you'll need to get the flash tool so that you can get the updated ECU onto your car.

This page which also references this page has *lots* of great info. I know it's a lot of info, but I'd highly recommend sitting down with your favorite beverage and just reading through it. You'll gain everything you need to know.

BTW, I'm planning on driving about 8 hrs next week to get the "live" tune done by Jan. I have an absolutely bone stock 2010 MCS and was considering getting the JCW stage 1, but after reading about everyone's experiences with the RMW tune I decided to hell with the drivetrain warranty...you only live once right?

I will definitely post back results. If I get even remotely close to Ed's 30 HP gain I will be extremely satisfied. What I really want more than just pure horsepower is a smoother torque curve. Right now when I gun it on the on-ramp I can feel the hesitation and it makes me want to shift a bit early just to keep the acceleration going. At first I didn't notice it, but the more I drive it the more I notice it now. I have a feeling the 8 hour drive back home is going to be a fun one!

Installed the tune today... Holy Crap... It's an entirely different car.

Before, where it used to feel like it was running out of breath at 5500 rpm, it now pulls HARD all the way to redline. I saw 16.5psi on the scan gauge where before it was about 12.5...

This thing is a real hoot. Seems to be well worth the money...lol

Hey Richard, that sounds awesome! I'm dying to get my tune done now. So this is just with the canned tune yeah? Although I'm more interested in the power and torque smoothness, I'm curious if you get a little exhaust burble now?

As far as I know, Jan isn't including the P&B (pop and burble) in the tune files just yet. It is on his list of upcoming enhancements though.

Oh well, that's definitely last on my list of wants anyway. I've been waiting 5 months for the tune so I can wait several months longer for the bells and whistles.

Question for ya SimpsonGI: out of all the drivetrain mods you have on your R56, which one(s) do you think made the most improvements along with the tune? I think I'm going to get the Helix FMIC and boost tubes (maybe NM) next. Does that sound sane? Thanks!

I had most of my mods all done at once so I can't really say for sure which one made the most bang for the buck. However, a better IC allows a tuner to turn the boost up a little bit more than they can with a stock IC. I believe Jan recommends an IC upgrade as one of the first mods. Other than the IC, probably the TBE (turbo back exhaust). I really love the sound of the deeper, throatier exhaust. I do have a little bit of drone on the freeway but it really isn't any worse than the road noise from the run flats on my wife's '09 Clubman S. The exhaust will sound even better with the P&B.

If you do any tubes, try to get hard tubes if you can. They are usually more expensive but they are much more durable. I've been considering changing mine out for the NM hard tubes. I haven't yet as I am not having any issues caused by my ALTA tubes but if they ever wear out or collapse I'm going to go with hard tubes.

I was ALTA's test subject for the UniChip on an automatic. They do have some dyno charts of the gains I got from their parts. I'm including this solely so you can see what my drivetrain parts did for my MINI performance wise.

http://www.altaperformance.com/pages/show/70

I took the UniChip off about a year ago. I wasn't having as many problems from it as a lot of the others were. My main issue with it was that it would occasionally lose power under hard acceleration for a moment as if it was stuttering.

I think the biggest bang for the buck is a good ECU tune.

It's responses like yours that keep me hooked on this forum. Thanks for all this info, it's really informative.

Yeah, I've watched some Youtube vids of ppl with the RMW tune and after-market exhausts and omg it sounds soooo good. I'm not sure if it'll pass the wife factor test but I may have to see.
