WARNING! Use Factory Oxygen Sensor

My car was throwing codes. P2097 Post Catalytic fuel trim sensor, too rich bank 1.

I bought online 2 oxygen sensors. The online store - Partsgeek, listed the them as Bosch with same p/n. I had them installed and they fit up to the stock connectors. The code never goes out. Put in RMW street cam and car perks up a bit - see my dyno. Then it starts running crappy. Jan diagnosed it as bad oxygen sensor. He asked if it was factory sensor. What do I know? It was Bosch. Well all Bosch sensors are not the same. You must use the FACTORY sensor, not some reseller's version of oem replacement. The sensors look different and are different.

Jan got me the original stock factory sensor and Mike put it in. Immediately the car resumed its awsome peak performance. (245hp, 197 ft-lb. tq) (following Jan-tune, but perhaps capable of better now with correct sensor)

Dyno here: post 11 at

Before replacing sensor this last time, the computer was trying to make a -35% fuel adjustment with the "trim function", or so-called "adaptives", and the car was struggling to run when cold. Now its back to 0% trim.

We had same situation with an 05 MCS, 87K miles. After installing New Bosch O2 sensor - CEL for P2097.

Codes could not be cleared by anyone except MINI Dealer as they had to reset the adaptation values for the DME.....

So what you are saying that BOSCH is making a special O2 sensor just for our line of cars ? How was the one you saw different than the first one ?

BTW damn nice numbers

Thanks for the heads up. I've always assumed that Bosch is the supplier to BMW/Mini FI & engine management. Apparently, it's Siemens! So it seems the Bosch Oxygen sensors you bought are out-of-spec. Do the OEMs have the supplier's name stamped on them besides BMW/Mini?

Mini USA Letter extenting emissions warranty

Mini USA sent out letters extending the warranty of the oxygen sensors to 10 years or 100,000 miles on MY 2004-2006 autos. If you have that letter, the dealer will replace the sensor on this special warranty.

I used a non-dealer Bosch sensor for a couple of years with no worries. I paid about 60% of the dealer price for it. So, perhaps it is not true that every Mini requires the OEM sensor from the dealer?

What about non-autos? I am running the code currently.

The recall is independent of the type of transmission you have.

This is the Bosch unit.

If you had the Bosch Premium O2 sensor for like 60 bucks....that is totally different looking and not to spec's.

Testing my solder in sensor vs a good OEM resulted in the same voltage return. Its not a friggin wide band.

I actualy bought one listed as a Denso and it had the same tip design as my OEM Bosch... not sure how that worked out. But my code is gone on its own, I never did a reset.
