Change the CHIP -->> FAST COOPER??

Hi guys.
I'm new to the Cooper world.
I have a 2006 Cooper S (R53) 6-speed manual.

I remember one of my friends long time ago told me that if you have a Cooper S and if you change some chip on the car it will make your car super fast!!

Is there such thing for Cooper S...some upgraded chip or ECU or whatever??

I'm not big on mechanics so I have no clue what it could be.

If someone knows or has an idea of what I'm talking about, please let me know.

Thanks

~Sergey~

The right tune can make a big improvement, but the wrong "chip" can be a disaster on a forced induction engine.

You can get the factory JCW kit that includes a new cold air intake, chip, and exhaust, IIRC.

Going with an aftermarket chip can void your warranty. People do it anyway. Look at some of the threads in the Mods section. Some chips seem to be disasterous for MINIs, others perhaps not.

The chip (ECU), itself isn't removed or swapped out. Your ECU can be "tuned" via software uploads, in a wide variety of fashions. There are owner-upload units like the Shark Injector, add-on boxes like Unichip, and by far, the best option: a custom tune from some of the MINI tuning world's kings, (RMW, WMW, just to name a couple)...

It involves getting your MINI onto a dyno, where a baseline horsepower and torque number is figured out at the wheels. The tuner then "tweaks" your chip by uploading data, in a magical, highly scientific and proprietary way that I cannot comprehend, to make your MINI produce more horsepower and torque. What I can comprehend is the results, having had this done to my MINI.

Custom tunes are arguably better than the "canned" tunes that you could get from "over-the-counter" tuning options like the Shark Injector and Unichip, because it is 100% custom tuned to YOUR specific MINI. As we all know, everyone's MINI is slightly different from the next.

It costs more for a custom dyno-tune session, but the results are worth every penny.

Overtime I fell in love with my little MINI once I fixed all the problems and now I'm a very happy Mini Cooper owner hehe

I just love the way this little bugger handles...I don't think I"ll find a better joy-ride car than Cooper, so I decided to stick with it

Swapping chips come from back when everything was on PROM. Once that chip was programmed there was no way to change what is on it. We are well past that point, the only way you really "swap chips" on modern cars is dropping the stock ECU and going to a full aftermarket like an Adaptronic or something.
