Drivetrain "S" with a CVT?
I heard that next year the S will be available in an automatic? If so I'm bummed....I have a MC coming with the auto and I would have loved to get the S....but don't want to wait until the next model year. Can't I put a supercharger on my MC?

If I remember right, and was told correctly, you cannot put a supercharger on a MC that has a stock hood. The MCS has a taller hood for the supercharger, but remember, this is what I was told. And to answer your other question, I'm not sure about the CVT on the MCS.

CVT for MCS? Not until 2005+ maybe. Too early to tell. The official word doesn't come until as late as August 2004 for the following models.
Add a SC to the MC? I don't think so. You'd be better off with turbo but with all that power you'd have to be careful with the MC transmission. Simply bolting on an SC to the MC engine is not the same as an MCS. The MCS engine has many other upgrades to it besides the SC alone. Not to mention the 6 speed Getrag transmission matched with the increased power if the MCS engine.
Just enjoy your MC with CVT for now and if needed later on you can sell and buy the MCS of the future when it does arrive with CVT.

A turbo uses the exhaust gases to spin fans and as a result push more air into the engine.
A supercharger does the same thing but instead of using the exhaust gasses it runs off the engine.
Since a turbo needs exhaust gasses it typically has "lag" which is basically the time from when you start going until the exhaust gasses start to spin the fans. The supercharger hpwever, starts going once you step on it.
However, Turbos also have the ability to make more power at the top end (ie. higher top speed usually) while superchargers usually make better speeds at the lower RPMs.

Bobbyn,
Sorry this discussion wandered off topic a bit.

Daytona,
Thanks for the explanation for Erik808's question.

If you want to know about the CVT for future MINIs you might want to contact Gabe Bridger or read about new stuff at his site- he tends to find some neat MINI news just a tad before the rest of us. See what he has to say about MCS with CVT and what rumors he has heard.

Hello Bobbyn,
Were I in the same position, I'd keep the CVT for a couple of years, and then
consider getting a MCS with the CVT in say 2006 sometime? I also would expect that Mini will upgrade the engine in "S" as well. Some may disagree with me,
but I think the engine on the current S is the weakest link...
Or, maybe, we might get lucky and get a good turbodiesel in the future
I'd sacrafice a couple of seconds to 60 for an oil burner!
My $.02,

I own a Cooper CVT and I tell ya this is one of the coolest automatic transmissions ever offered on a production car. We have had our CVT for about 19K miles with no problems whatsoever..pretty solid CVT Transmission from ZF.
If the CVT is ever offered in the MCS I would be interested but I tend to agree that a SMG box will be a better choice, but the CVT technology is impressive as well.
I am sure that many hardcore "Stick shift only" MCS owners cringe at the possibility of an automatic MCS, but until you drive a Cooper CVT or a BMW M3 with SMG you will never understand the potential of a CVT or SMG MCS.

Actually, if you take the time to read the info published in the ZF site (The manufacturer of the CVT in the current Cooper), the VT1 transmission seems well suited to handle over 200HP right out of the box. Sure there are technical hurdles but I am sure the CVT transmission is not one of them.
Further, you can purchase a new Audi A6 sedan complete with a 227HP V6 engine and a CVT transmission. Or you can get a new Nissan Murano SUV with CVT and also a V6 from factory.
CVTs have come a long, long way, baby!

>>id prefer a S with SMG over CVT.

oh boy, us chicago peeps think alike!
i sure am with you on this one!
although if we got SMG, i'd want a BMW engine too! hehehe
i guess the closest possible thing will be the SMG 1 or 2 series when they come out!
i can't afford to replace my car yet anyway!

nfo- yah, can't wait to see the new 1- and 2- series. CVT is a cool option,
i think the performance stepup from a MT is SMG.
you kinda loose the fun factor on the SMG, but if you wanna go fast
consistently, it's the way to go.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the info on the S CVT....if it doesn't come out for a coples years I won't mind and might upgrade to the S....but I'm planning to mod her up pretty good so we'll see.
I really love driving stick....but I'm on the road all day for my job....NY NJ traffic....stinko
not to menton I can't type on my laptop and drive stick...talk on the phone at the same time
)
Btw...I stooped at the dealer today just to sit in one
) ....I can't wait to get it.
Talk to you all soon
