Bypass Valve Replacement Instructions?

I am going to be ordering a DT bypass valve, but I would like to take a look at what is involved with replacing it myself. I have searched for a DIY, but have not bee successful in finding anything. Any ideas?

DT sends DE-TAILED instructions w/ it !! Just be CAREFUL w/ the lower "horn"--------FIRM / SHORT pull apart-----you'll see. Trick--LIGHT application of plbrs faucet grease on the "push-togethers". Follow Chads instructions to the letter------they're PURRFECT !!

I bought and had installed the DT Bypass Valve and my Mini Mechanic told me to beware at 3500-4000 rpm in 3rd and 4th gear that I'd feel a power loss/stall. He was right; and I'm wondering why does this happen? I have an 03 Mini Cooper S.

I've also noticed a lull from time to time in that region, always at partial throttle under light acceleration. Putting your foot down resolves the issue, so I'm guessing the cause is vacuum driven.

My "lulls" are in full throttle and worse when going up any type of incline/hill and it is disheartening at best. Only way I have found to resolve it is to shift early to 4th or 5th gear and move on. I believe vacuum is the issue but is it because the product is not properly tuned/calibrated for the vacuum difference? Looking for Detroit Tuned theory and fix.

Have you tried turning off all traction control? If so may be the bypass valve is responsible. I know of a well respect Mini owner blogger that wrenches his track cars had an early gen 1 R53 with Yo Yo. He installed a new Detroit Tune BPV and it didn't make it better. He then installed a new MINI OE one and that cured it. Apparently MINI change the characteristic of the BPV due to the original problem on earlier cars.

I've noticed the same thing. There is what feels like a momentary / split second downward blip in power at around 3500 RPM. I was worried I might have some kind of vaccum leak somewhere. Glad to see that it's just a common issue with this upgraded BPV. Would be interesting to see dyno plots to see if there is actually any power loss because of this.

Check for leaks. At anything past maintaining speed or light acceleration I have no noticeable lull in power. I just attribute it to the weirdness of the BPV system, it used to be worse with the old stock BPV that fluttered. It's not really a lull in power for me, it really just feels like the car isn't sure it wants to deliver boost and accelerate.

I have been reading the horror stories long before I order my precious 05 Desire back in 04 Spring. After receiving her I thought for years she is afflicted by the incurable disease of the inevitable yo yo effect. Yo yo can be fun if you are into it and are good at it, but not so much when you try to modulate the throttle and your life depends on it - the throttle that is.

It would take me a long time to realize in my case the ASC traction control nanny has been pulling the evil strings. Desire has no sign of hesitation especially seeing a Vett, a Porsche, and better an exotic car on race tracks. May be its just that we keep the RPM up above 4000.

Seriously, I had many close calls leaving ASC on pulling out from an intersection. IMHO, that alone should be ground for major recall for a software fix. Now my standard preflight procedure in the mental checklist is to hit the moronic switch that is labeled ASC.

Legal disclaimer: You are advised to follow the manufacture's advice especially the first few pages of the owner's manual. My opinions are my own as I live life recklessly and I treat all my processions as disposable - including Desire the little car that makes me laugh each time I see it.

I should add, I drive exclusively with the traction control off.

I don't need any of that nanny state ******** in a 200hp front wheel drive car.

There is a flat spot in the tune on in the R53 mini cooper s. You can actually see it in dyno sheets as a small blip. Every car is different in how it reacts to that condition as well as the yo-yo with or without the DT BPV. MINI tried to fix the yo-yo with a new ECU program in mid 05, but it didn't work for every car. the BPV has been over all the same since day one. they have "updated" a few items...like screws..lol but it has been the same spring and size since 2002 so overall the operation of the BPV has been the same. but each car is a bit different in how it runs, vacuum leaks, and performance. there are a lot of variables as each car is not the same. A long time ago there was a batch of Intake tubes from SC to TB that were all a bit short, so as soon as they TB was bolted down it causes a small vacuum leak at the SC. the car would overcome it, but some cars didn't it all depends on how sensitive that ECU and the sensors were on that car. In the end, we sell 12-24 BPV's a month to many happy customers and you don't see too many for sale used online. I always recommend anyone thinking about it to zip tie there's shut to see if that fixes they problem they are trying to solve and if they like the feel if it, they will like how out BPV acts. and any time anyone calls me saying something is now not working correctly after installing it, it ALWAYS comes back to a vacuum leak. Here to help whenever needed.
