Squeeling after a cold start, pulley? tension stop
im getting a weird Squeeling after a cold start and by cold start i mean the car sits overnight and started the next day the engine has a squeel to it for the first 3-5 minutes that its running. is this a belt? i have this under the mods board becuase i have a pulley and not sure if thats what is causing it. i have an alta 15%/ napa belt alta sent me with the alta tensioner stop (which also rattles like crazy because its not bent right and i haven't had the time to bend it more inward like the picture shows) could this be causing it? also the nut that holds the tensioner stop down, does that have a torq spec on it, because i just tightened it as much as i could with a standard size 13mm wrench?
I have the same sounds pretty much every time i start the car and its cold out, the only thing iv noticed is it usually does it in lower gear 1 or 2, and that it typically goes away after its been run for a while. i have a pulley and new belt to. anyone have a solution for this, i hate it when my car sounds like a beater.....
The Alta stop is known for rattling....not sure about screaching though....I got the Detroit tuned stop for this reason. Check the edges of you belt...sounds like you have an alighnment issues with the belt/pulley...or perhaps the pulley itself is slipping....a few folks have had it happen if it is not tourqued down correctly at install.
One more tip for both of you....have a set of sparkplugs, one step cooler installed..the same as the JCW....you will be running more boost than a JCW, and they are strongly recomended and you will see a hp/driveability improvement too!!

Plugs will just make a pulley car run better.....just about everybody recomends installing a new set, one step cooler, the JCW ones, when you do a pulley. Most good kits include the new plugs, along with the pulley and belt too. It is possible to use the stock belt with the 15%, but it simply not worth the 25$ saved, since you have already done the labor with the pulley install, and the stock belt can slip with the 15% when streatched a bit.
To answer your question on what to do about the squelling belt...I'd get it looked at ASAP. It sounds like an alightment issue mostly....and that could destroy the belt overtime. Why take chances. If you get it looked at, and the belts and pulleys are ok, you could try a Goodyear gatorback belt....the backing is a bit different and some have found it reduces squeeling....but I would try to fix the problem first.

Just noticed that you are up in Indy.....you should give Wayland a call at WayMotorWorks a call. He does some work up there still, and I'm sure he can give you some good advise and maybe check the install for you!! He splits his time between Atlanta GA, and Indy, so he would be a great resource for you, both for parts and service!! Training and experance wise, he is certainly a great person to have trouble shoot your car!!
Since you are in AZ, I STRONGLY reccomend you install cooler plugs before it gets hot. Since your buddy has a tourqe wrench from doing the install, you guys can use it for the spark plugs....just be sue to check them in 3000 miles or so......maybe sooner to make sure they are not loosing up!!
Good luck!!!
Good luck!!!
Are you talking about a squealing from the belt or from clutch/fly wheel? I get that for about 5 min on cold mornings when coming out of 1st from a stop.. Sounds a little like Chewbacca (a fellow NAM'r used that and I can't think of a better description)
When I went and moved to a 15% I replaced the belt, plugs, and added the stop as well. Like others have said, might as well take care of all that at once. I just felt I was prolonging the reliability by taking care of those items.
I've been pretty happy since then. The rattling of the stop gets on my nerves when the windows are down. I think I might be switching to a DT one when I need to take Jerome in next.

The DT stop is great... Cheap, easy to install and best of all, silent!! Alta does make some pretty good products, but their tension stop thinggy is a trainwreck. It is different...just not good different IMO.
thats what i hear. simplicity wins in this case with a standard cable and 2 eyelets swedged on. i could make one at work but im so agrivtated with the alta one at this point i want it gone asap and dont wana spend any more time thinking about it. alta deffinatly over thought that peice out untill it didnt work properly. im sure there will be a 2.0 stop from them soon lol
I don't want to turn this into an bashing Alta thread just because I agree they make good products.. This is one I hope they do something about soon though.
I have wanted to cut the darn thing out a few times. It rattles enough that it makes it sound like something is about to fall off.

Is it sound like a belt squeal or does it maybe sound like something higher or lower pitched?
If it a belt squeal and a "new" decent-quality belt, something's mis-aligned (the 'new' pulley?) or frozen (like what happened to my alternator) - or could be either the tensioner pulley or idler pulley w/ a bad bearing...
Have you verified, while it's running, that all the parts that are supposed to turn, are (properly)?...
