I might be interested in adding this to my Pilo ignition set.
I'd need to know how difficult it is to add the wire covers- I'd like to see a how to. If easy then I'd be inclined to do it.
Choice of colors- Instead of only Blue, Red, white, and black (who wants black when they are already black?)-
What about yellow, purple, green, silver, gold, pearl, multicolor?

REgarding Colors, They are pretty limited to those colors. This is because of the High Temperature Aplication that they are being used for. THe Black would be used just as a protective cover for those that do want the color.
Installation is very easy. You will recieve 4 Pre Cut Pieces. You will just have to remove the spark plug wires from the car, Remove the rubber boot that covers the connection to the Coil Pack. Put the Wire Cover on with the 2 heat shrink tubes, use either a hair dryer or a heat gun to shrink the tubing and hold the braiding in place. Re install the Rubber Boot, and you are done. Took me about 30 minutes to do.
I'll make up a how to tonight or tomorrow.
Thanks

Those look like a nice piece of work. Very professional look.
But, the physicist in me asks how a fiberglas covering can
protect the wires from heat. They might add a tiny-touch
of insulating value, but after about 30 extra seconds of run-time,
the wires are going to be exactly the same temperature as
they would be without the wire covers.
Now, big, bright blue FINS on the wires would at least radiate
heat which would be even more sharp.
So, I'd lessen the protective claims, and go with the coolness
factor in your ads.

I think that if this product did in fact provide heat protection and were avail in a wider range of colors ( wierd stuff like saftey orange to placate the strange ones of us) I would be interested.

What this does is not insulate, and keep cool, but protect from the high heat of the engine. Compartment, especially Diret contact with the engine.
There are other looms available, but not with the High Temperature Capabilities that I am looking for. I might be able to get some and test them to see if they would work under the hood.
Thanks

I decided to do some at home testing. What happens to a wire when put into an open flame.
First Test. Wire with Pilo Racing Wire Cover
Test Held in an open Flame for 10-12 Seconds.
Second Test. (new) Wire with out Cover.
Could not hold for more than 5 seconds - Started to catch Fire....
Here are the Final results.
Wire Cover is on the top, The Bottom is the burnt Rubber of the second Test.

Just to clarify. The top wire is a stock wire that was covered with the upgrade wire cover then submitted to a flame for 10-12 seconds. Then the wire cover was removed for comparison sake in the photo.
Next up- the C-4 explosive wrap test in your backyard.

Yes, That is correct, It was removed for Photo Sake. The Color Changed a bit on the rubber, no change in composure though.
The Uncovered one, Is Burnt rather bad. If I kept it in for the whole 10 seconds, My stove would have had burnt rubber on it...
Thanks

See, the problem with MiniPilo's testing is that it in no way
simulates the conditions tht a spark plug wire will encounter.
If a plug wire is exposed to an open flame, you've got problems.
If a plug wire is touching a hot part of the engine you also
have problems. They don't dangle on the exhaust do they?
Plug wires encounter hot contitions for a LONG LONG time,
not 10-12 seconds only which is the thing your fiberglas
covering is protecting them from.
I'll dare you to perform a more realistic experiment:
1) Plug wire with covering.
2) Plug wire without.
Put them in the oven for 60 minutes at as high a setting
you can set, and then post some photos of the results.
I'm predicting that either you won't do the experiment,
or that there won't be any significant difference in
the results with and without the cover.
Thermodynamics RULES!

I, for one, think this is an excellent idea for a product. Rather than spend lots of money to get colored plug WIRES that have no measurable effect on performance, one could spend LESS money to get colored plug wire COVERS that have no measurable effect on performance.
Even cheaper, make it yourself.

Go with the FlexoPET in 3/8" @ 61 cents a foot. I doubt you'll need more than 2 feet.

Get the heatshrink while you're there too. $1.75 a foot. A foot should be more than enough.
LINK TO HEATSRHINK
Really cool site. Snoop around. They have lots of fun choices besides colors (mirrored mylar, chrome, metal and CF and such). You can probably buy enough in different sizes to other hoses and wires for $25.

HEY, I spent $150 on a stupid shifter-**** that has
no effect on performance, so I'm not going to poopoo
spending money on looks.
Just make sure it's presented as a looks-improver, not
a performance improver.

Trippy,
Your $150 Whalen **** is a piece of "functional art" a great example of a custom engraved **** with a personal logo.
It's pretty darn nice.
MiniPilo's home test was to extreme heat. Like the kind when your engine bay is on fire. Hope that doesn't happen to me. At least my wires will be safe for 12 seconds. Better bring along two fire extinguishers for each hand.
Trippy's test is for chronic heat exposure- the extreme bake test if you will. I would worry what would happen to the rubber ends. You'd have to bake it for a long time. But under true conditions the engine heats up and cools down in cycles as you use it so maybe even a bake and rest test multiple times is more realistic.
I like functional art. The MINI is a great car to add customized stuff to.

Hey Guys... I'm not sure why you keep talking about Performance, or insulation value. There is none. What there is, is protection from extreme temperatures, like contact with any part of engine metal, or in a very rare case (and probably not even that much help) fire. Secondly, This gives people that want the look factor on there car to be able to do so.
I just want to make my self clear that I have never stated this will improve performance, or insulate the wires.
Thanks

Thanks for the post Dan. I can see you are now focusing on the decorative aspects
of your cool wire covers. That's nice to see, and I appreciate your honesty.
But I do need to point out some quotes from your earlier posts in this thread.
When you say those things, I get cranky, because if it doesn't insulate the plug wires, not
only can it NOT "protect from the high heat of the engine", it has no effect on the plug wires
when it comes to the heat of the engine. Since you mention 1200 degrees F. radiant,
you are discussing non-contact heat, so your later comments about it protecting from
momentary contact with a hot surface are discussing a different thing.
It was probably a little bit of marketing flim-flam, and I jumped down your throat about it.
So, good job, and I hope you sell millions of these as decorations. They do look like a
VERY nicely executed product.

I'm interested, but would really love to see the safety orange. I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. I was thinking of this very same idea a few days ago, about a decorative coloring. Fyi, Moss did a halloween promotion, Jackson Racing wire plugs (4) for $29. While that's a special price, I'd wish you'd come down in price atleast $10 to $19.95 and I think that would be a winner.

OK, but when I look at the title of the thread:
Poll: "Performance Spark Plug Wire Covers" Interest
I see how it might be interpreted as a Performance thread in the Performance Modifications forum.
As stated before, Orange and other colors not shown are not currently an option for these wires.
I agree that for the covers' stated purpose a slightly lower price would be more attractive. Maybe an introductory special and a good How to do it. Thanks a bunch.

What is the Diamater of the Nology? They can work up to a 9.5 MM Wire. These are usable installable, and can install in about 30 minutes. THe Instructions should be up by tomorrow night.

Hello Dan,
Not sure diamiter of the new wires.. i thought you might be fimiliar with Nology, they have that capacitor and what looks like a ground strap, definitly not the normal wire and no diamiter size is available in the description.. they will be in early next week..
Anyway, i melted one of the jackson racing wires and ordered these nology as replacements.. i didnt want to melt antother wire so your wire sheilds look like a good idea..IF you want to send me a set of wire sheilds ill fit them and send you some pics.. what do they cost anyway??
