Running lean why?

I went for dyno today. The guy that was testing my MINI said that I was running super lean at 18 and higher. He said that cause I have an intake that it either makes it run rich or makes it run lean. I have the Gen 2 Alta intake so I was wondering if anyone else had that problem. He also told me that I need to have it tuned to fix it, which I agree with him. The only problem is I am about to get an inter cooler and then have it tuned. Which I might end up just upgrading to a different intake something that won't rub on the GTSpec STB. Any thoughts on how I can resolve this.

I dont think your true AFR would be sitting at 18 on WOT. Your car would easily either show no power from the engine backing off timing like crazy, or detonate.

If you were running 18 to 1, I think VERY bad things would happen extremely quickly. Your EGT would spike like crazy, thats for sure.

Well thats a good thing that hasn't happened but on the dyno sheet it was saying I was running super lean. Could it be my MAF is dirty. I am going to clean it and see if that might fix it. But I am talking to my MA Monday about it.

Its possible. You dont have any check engine lights, do you? If you are running this lean its possible it could be something with your O2 sensors causing a problem. The only time I was running insanely lean/rich was when I had a bad O2 sensor on my VW.

I would definitely get this checked out before something bad happens to your motor

Gilboyto,

Have you had any check engine lights with your Exhaust?

Yep! lol. Actually, my car is weird with this exhaust on it. Within 50 miles my check engine came on for P0420 and stayed that way for approx 1 month. Then randomly shut off on a roadtrip. Came on 4 days later. Then 2 days afterwards it went off again.

It seems it comes on for about a day or two every week+. I just get used to it lol.

My car is actually running rich. My Alta Catback tip is covered in black soot almost immediately after i wash the tip out. I do have an intake as well. Any way to fix that? Waste of fuel and power

Get a tune haha. Thats about the only way to stop it from running overly rich. I had the turboback only for a while and got the same MPG I had before. Now after the intake my MPG immediately went from 31-32 in the city to 28 city. I imagine your MAF is seeing a larger amount of air than previous and is compensating for that by adding more fuel.

Now if only the handheld tuner would come out already

Sorry Porthos, I should have clarified. That post above yours is meant in response to malteseracer.
