That gives me an idea to fab up the air inlet tube that goes to the bottom of the filter. Make it staighter and a little rounder. Now a performance mod but it would be better air flow.

Function like the stock setup 2. make a better sound than the stock setup. 3. look good.

This is what I came up with. It is heavy gauge stainless steel (#7 polish) and will allow for use of the stock panel filter, or a K&N cone. Video clips and process photos to follow soon.

The open filter systems that I've seen, all suck the 'hot' engine air. I've seen estimates that for every 10 degree drop in temp, an engine can gain 1hp. How true that is for out cars, I do not know. I'm not all that concerned either to be honest, but that theory still applies I guess. Air is more dense as it gets colder.
there are more variables than just temperature you know? but its an estimate that seems to be true most of the time. cars with turbos seem to get better gains when it gets cold, you dont loose all of that hp in the terrible stock front mount when its cold. not exactly a gain in horsepower just a retrieval of your lost horsepower due to inefficiency

btw what cad program were you using, and what did you use for the programing of the cnc?

Solidworks 2010 for CAD. The program is generated directly from the model. Mastercam will work too for milling and machining. Gone are the days of typing in strings of code. At least at our shop.
