Forge intercooler

So i have a forge intercooler, i was drag racing on the track yesterday, this intercooler just gets so hot! I had to throw water over it to cool it down. Is this the norm with intercoolers or isit possibly because i dont have iridiums?
Temp was about 14deg celcius.

Oh and the car stays on 5 cars before i run, this is in the main line.

Yes it's normal
this is why we run a properly designed methanol kit to cool down the inlet charge

thank goodness, was getting worried. Even The GRS coolers does this? Im guessing the guys who drags on track without meth kit, keeps a bag of ice with them?

Haha yes unfortunately the Forge/Alta V2/GRS/stock intercoolers will all get extremely hot when sitting inside your hot engine bay at idle with no airflow going over the cooling fins.

A bag of ice ontop the intercooler is a cheap way to help resolve this problem, but by no means the best.

There is a local tuner here that offers a mist system for the top mount intercooler. It just sprays a mist of normal water over intercooler. How effective is this in everybody's opinion?

I used a tank sprayer at my last AutoX before and after each run just to wet down the IC. The temps almost never got above 100 degrees when the ambient temp was in the 80s. Compare this to the last day when it was in the 80s where I was seeing temperatures in the 150s without water. Water on the IC is a very simple and cheap way to cool things down, if you can get the right amount of water on there it is theoritcally possible to get the IC itself (not necassirily the air going through) to sub ambient temps thanks to the evaporative cooling effect the water provides.

In otherwords it can be pretty effective. I have an AutoX in a week, so I can take some hard data if you want...

Thanks Guy - I might seriously consider this option, especially when the hot african summer is around the corner. If you could get some data that would be well appreciated - if it's too much trouble, not to worry

Mike S - are you frm S.A ?? Which part? Thats alot of mods you have on ur mini, and probably the fastest mini in S.Africa! Im sure it costed you a fortune, all those parts and to bring it down?

Have you put your mini on the strip? What times are you doing?

Hi R53,

That's what my location says I'm in Johannesburg. I take it you are also from South Africa?

I ran out of space in the signature, or I would have added the rest Yes, it was a pretty penny. Costed double the price of what is listed by the vendors on this site by the time it landed here with import tax and shipping. I would rather pay extra and have items that have been tried and tested by hundreds if not thousands of clients. I hate our local stuff, they always look like someone made it in their garage. For example, look at the welds from this local exhaust shop. What a joke!

Haven't been to the 1/4 mile yet with the car, I'd imagine I'd be at the high 13's or low 14's 1400 meters above sea level. Which is pretty damn good IMO.

Good to hear of more modded mini's in S.A. You dont hear much of them around and you would never see a mini on the drag strip. I like your interest in it:-D you saw the light...
Im sure it costed u almost the price of a second hand r53 altogether?
Any reason you had not raced it yet? Im pretty sure you would run those times! Keep it up!

That exhaust work is disgusting! I hope you went back and gave them a piece of your mind?
What exhaust you have? How many boxes?

That's not my car! I'd be behind bars by now if they did work like that. Merely just an example, but a typical South African one.
That's exactly why I modded mine, it's not the typical car that gets modded over here. Yes, it costed basically what the car cost me when I bought it new 6 years ago
Don't race it much, I prefer using my other cars for that.

I have the JCW exhaust system with the RMW header which I bought from Jan from this forum.

This is what my car's engine bay looks like, I've since added a rear strut brace, full powerflex bushes and mounts. Planning to add intercooler mist system and an oil cooler next. Then I'm done! (That's what I always say )

A shot from the outside (sorry for hijacking your thread).

Thank John - I merely mentioned the local guy as it would be the easiest for me to obtain. Plus I get to save some money on import duties!

Here is the local guy's website. Scroll down to the mist system, not too much info though - I think you'd need to email them to get more details. I do know that they ship internationally. http://www.rgmotorsport.com/html/mini_cooper.html

Yes, I love this car too much. Hence why I just kept upgrading instead of getting another.

I'm not mad about the looks of the GP. It's too "boy-racer" for me (no offense to anybody who likes it), just different strokes for different folks.

Correct, same one from that website. It's not very active and I see they have closed the site.

Thanks Mike , Nice site.

I just was thinking with more to look at when it comes to CO2 you might be able to come up with something in your neck of the woods.

There are some DIY's if you do some searching on these subjects.
