does any know how loud a MCS would be if the exhaust was completely taken off? the resonator would be left on.

I have driven with a resonator and straight pipe before and it is freakin LOUD and resonates so much it makes your ears feel like they are going to bleed.

Despite the literal translation of your posted question (if you have no exhaust, then what is the resonator attached to,) I have run with only a resonator after the cat (header, cat, resonator, straight pipe) and it's freekin loud. And the noise inside the car is unbearable.
If you want a great straight system, then check into the one Partsman just put together using an R56 muffler.

These cars are loud with most exhausts, but I had to drive with an open header to the exhaust shop once. The car sounded like a stock car, crazy loud, and it ran like crap as well, no power at all.

I had to drive back down the dragon open header after losing my bolts after straddling (more like high center rail slide) the rim of the road on a turn off spot. When I got back to the village I felt nauseous from the intensity of the drone even with all the windows open it was shear INSANITY.

After cutting the stock resonator and muffler off the exhaust guy revved my engine and said how about no exhaust and it was extremely LOUD so then he said alright choose between a hiflow resonator or magnaflow muffler and i obviously chose the muffler. its still loud as **** but i wish it was louder. but after headers and a hiflow cat i will be all set. def dont run no muffler and no res.. but if your runnin a resonator and no muffler you should be fine.

My header just recently broke in half (literally). Thats loud. It broke right below the first cat. I had to drive it once and it was a mere 10 minute drive and I started to get very sick towards the end. Its too loud for daily driving, you have to have some sort of muffler to keep things reasonable.
