So I have to agree with Adam. The spacer from forge can´t get all the air out as fast as the oem... And I have all the mods. except a bigger turbo..
Forgot to add-

Thats akward, the reason why I am actually putting the spacer is to get rid of the surge I already have.

Right. So get the ALTA BOV kit or similar to remove compressor surge. Get the Forge part to make more noise.

OK so after work I uninstalled my Forge diverter plate. And I have louder compressor surge now. I forgot how screechy it could be. It sounds very violent. I am letting it cool down and I am going to re install it for the umpteenth time. These are just my observations, Im sure not everyone will have the same experience. I keep taking this thing off because I dont know if I like it or if its good for the car. But the car runs better with it on. I am going to get a BOV, but I have a few other things to do first.

NeverMind. I took it back off. It sounds the same either way.

Are any of you SURE this is compressor surge? People with open air intakes on otherwise stock engines can often hear it, especially on the JCW stage 2 that runs higher boost than an S.

I could hear it very well when I had the chip. I could still here it after I took the chip off just not as loud. Once I ECU tuned it with a little more boost than stock it was a bit louder.

I'm not convinced the noise we hear is doing something bad to the turbo since you can hear it through open air intakes on otherwise stock engines.

In fact, it's so loud, you can hear the flutter you get afterwards. For a while, I thought I had a wierd clunking sound until I realized it was just the fluttering...

Our's sounds similar to this but not the same:

this is not compression surge you are all getting its the location off the bov next to the air filter, and it will cause that flutter noise if you are moving it away from the filter it will sound the regular bov sound

It is indeed compressor surge. I know the difference from the a BOV to the stock DV (that you hear with an open element air filter), to compressor surge.

I can confirm it IS compressor surge because when it flutters, you can very blatantly feel the lag after you shift when you are back on the throttle trying to accelerate. Since compressor surge sends the compressor wheel of the turbo spinning backwards and essentially stops it from its forward spinning momentum.. so when you are trying to build boost again it has to spin all the way back up. Essentially in laymen terms- when you are accelerating hard, you feel the car pushing you back into the seat, when you shift and you experience compressor surge, the car basically feels like it has 0 power when trying to accelerate in the next gear, as the turbo is lagging and trying to spool again...
If its a BOV sound, and a BOV- then you will not lose momentum in the compressor wheel and once you shift it will build boost (almost) immediately again, such as the stock setup on the car.

I just thought I would chime in again. I had compressor surge, and just installed the exhaust depot hardpipe kit with the HKS BOV and it is totally gone!! WOOOHOOOO! Just thought I would let you all know.

Use of the factory service manual, can be very helpful during the installation. These can be purchased at the dealership or online.
http://www.realoem.com has diagrams for the entire car, which can also be helpful.

Yo Adam, have been looking on-line for the R56 manual without any luck, can you steer us in the right direction?
Thanks, BTW saving the loose change for the Alta BOV
