Bad O2 sensor at 12,000 miles?

Hello Everyone,
My 2002 MCS with JCW kit gave me a check engine light last night under a light throttle application driving around town. I have only owned the car for two weeks. I plugged in my code reader and it looks like its a O2 sensor low voltage code. I haven't had an O2 sensor ever go bad on a car partly because I never own them long enough to go bad! Ha! However, this Mini has a super sprint header and cat and a BB exhaust. The catch is that the car only has 12,350 miles on it.

Anyhow, I cleared the code and wanted to see if it would come back.

Was this a problem on '02 Minis? Has anyone seen this before on such a low mileage car?

Thanks!
Bryan

many BMWs have oxygen sensor issues. Most of the time its a programming issue but once in a while its the actual
O2 sensor.

The ambient temperature was 40 degrees when I got the CEL. The light has not come back on but I also haven't driven the car in that temperature since. I am wondering if the high flow cat isn't as efficient at such a low temperature.

Is anyone else running the super sprint high flow cat?

What do you mean by "programming issue"?

Most times a Oxygen sensor fault can be a calibration issue within the DME. Usually these types of complaints are solved with an update to the vehicles programming ( done at the dealer ) using a machine called an SSS ( software service station ) and the latest verion of Progman ( dealer software thats loaded into your vehicle to change how it bahaves ).
I hope that clearifys

NO 1FSTMINI a GT1 is the diagnostic machine. it used software called DIS CD verion... ( which will be gone by the middle of this year ) replaced by ISIS. the programming station is the SSS. This used software called PROGMAN. youve never heard of a software problem because your not paying attention. im not saying that this IS his issue but its a definate possibility.

Why would you try to discredit me when im trying to help someone? doesnt make any sense especially when you have no idea what your talking about?

I didn't write it down unfortunately and it has not come back since I cleared it.

What is your code?

So JHUD,
I shouldn't be afraid to ask the dealer to ask them to update the vehicles programming? If there is a custom tune in the ECM will that be overwritten?

Thanks for the help!

i would say yes the tune would be overwritten. If there is a software fix for this problem the dealer should know about it. ask them if there are any SIBs on the subject.

I'm guessing some type of software bulletin? Similar to TSBs.

easy there killer. i wasnt trying to "discredit" you but made a comment on the name of the machine that updates the software already installed. the ISIS machine is something new which now combines an all in one machine ( gt1,sss,dsc ). When working for bmw/mini a few years back of 8yrs, the ISIS machine was not out yet and the GT1 was the machine we used to update exsisiting software which i seen dealers recently still able to use to do so.

im sorry if you took my comment as an attack but its not like i know you or you have a sig saying " mini/bmw tech ". A lot of people on here like to read and answer people with the info they found on the net.

So the temperature was lingering around 40 degrees today and I got the CEL again. This time it was a different code but from the same O2 sensor.

P2270

I am really starting believe it is a relationship between the temperature and the aftermarket catalytic converter.

See I don't trust the code. Last time I got the CEL, it was almost identical atmospheric and driving conditions (last time as at night)and it was a different code. I didn't write down the number but I know it was not the same number because it was a low voltage error on that O2 sensor.

Are you running an aftermarket cat?
