Drivetrain Great experience - RMW / Helix
Great experience - RMW / Helix
Last week Monday I dropped my Cooper S off @ Helix for some RMW goodness; the bumpstick and street header. I get a call later in the morning from Ralph@ Helix asking if my power steering ever gave trouble. So far it has not. However when he went to move the car into the shop, the car was sitting parked with the power steering pump just whirring away. After recharging my battery the car was pulled inside and work began.
The header was put on and Eric called to tell me that my intercooler boots needed changing as well as the passenger side engine mount
. No worries, I ask him to go ahead and replace them, he says he will look at the power steeering pump. Eric is pretty busy with the move to the new shop but he was always patient and service oriented with me. I get a call on Wed that the power steering pump needs replacing, because it continuously remains on. So I ask Eric to order a new pump. The pump arrives on Friday evening. I also ask Eric to put in the Brisk spark plugs I ordered.
This week Monday the pump is installed and the engine is buttoned up, I get a call from Eric on Tuesday to pick up the car. However when Eric took the car for a test drive the car has a slight mis-fire and idles very rough. The pick up is postponed. After pulling the top of the engine apart to recheck the cam install, and doing multiple compression tests (some of which show no compression) it is determined the cam is correctly timed and installed. The igntion coil is checked and the spark wires as well. Eric then restarts the car (I am watching) and it still has a very weird idle and doesn't sound right. Eric graciously lends me the his own car because I need a 2nd car as the wife needs her car on Wed.
Wednesday, Eric calls me in the morning and says they did a leakdown compression test and the motor is healthy, then they put back in the stock cam and the car runs perfectly. He calls Jan @ RMW to talk it over, Jan says he will overnight a camshaft to Eric ro install. It appears I may have gotten a wonky camshaft. So now I await the new camshaft and so forth.
I will update as necessary - however I want to publicly acknowledge how service oriented both Helix and RMW are.
The cam arrived @ Helix on Thursday afternoon. I got a call from Eric stating all is well this morning and picked up the car. See post below.

UPDATE
Just picked up the car
Impressions :
Just picked up the car
Impressions :
- At idle the car is pretty much the same noise level barely any lope.
- Driving around calmly - there is barely any noise increase.
- Once you are past I'd say 60% throttle it definitely takes on a sounds of it's own. Louder and racier. Car sounds nicer when you rev it.
- Launched - ran through 1st gear, 2nd and 3rd - the car pulls effortlessly throughly the gears. There is a struggle for traction in 1st gear from 3500 rpm through 5000 rpm.
- Definitely
producing.
