Drivetrain Engine swaps!

Believe its an e46 m3 motor thats in that mini. The reason why you haven't seen many swaps in R56s is that the amount of work and fabrication required to do really any swap is pretty steep, and the cars are basically new. Also, the only worthwhile swap would be fwd to awd or rwd, and its really difficult, not to mention you'd be butchering a basically new mini. (not cost effective)

Engine swaps are more common in larger cars because their engine bays can contain a larger engine... the MINI engine bay is so small theres not much bigger of an engine/transmission you could stick in their.
The only thing i could think of is haveing the engine inside the cabin area behind the driver which would require TONS of custom fab work.

I remember seeing video once of a Tiburon with a V6 in the front and another in the rear, each engine driving through its transaxle giving AWD.
Turbo 1.6 in the front, another in the rear, AWD 3.2L twin turbo with over 400hp, that would go! Horribly expensive to do though.

-Porshce 914
-Pontiac Fiero
-Older Porsche 911's
-British MG's
..these are the smaller cars that I can think of off hand that people put v8's into ...I don't think space is an issue w/ the MINI. I think the other issues already mentioned are more of the reason (cars are too new, not cost effective).

Mazdaspeed3 engine would be sweet, but I couldn't imagine the amount of work it would be to fit any larger engine in the MINI... it is already tight as is with the tiny 1.6L.
It sure does pull for 1.6L... my friends at work, after I gave them a ride asked if it had a V6... I politely told them it has a 1.6L inline 4. Always surprises them!

I think it would be much cheaper and better if you put a 28rs on it or something
