Water Pump Question

Hello everyone,

Hopefully someone can guide me with this. I just had my car serviced and I was told that my water pump will be needing to be replaced as soon as possible. I've seen some posts here abot the stock and an electric one and I'd just like to know which one is a smart move for daily commuter like me. I'm no racer so I don't need extra HP but I do want longevity since I drive so much. I was quoted by the dealership that it'll cost close to $1638... yeah I dropped my jaw after hearing that.

I've been looking around everywhere online to see what's the price of actually buying such parts and have seen some prices fluctuating around $200. I'm assuming it's labor that costs the most but still that's like 8x the amount and my dad can't wait to really do it himself so I know that's "free" labor.

So any guide as to what I should do, and any product type I should watch out for when searching online for water pumps. Oh I also have a 2006 MCS that I forgot to mention.

You could try this option, although in similar price range.

Just stick with the factory pump. It works. Going electric is a bit of a pain.

Oppps.... did you say the dealer wanted $1600 to replace your pump??? Better find someone else.

Basically it req's that the supercharger be replaced, the water pump is driven off the back of the supercharger.

Agreed. I've done this work and while it is rather involved (not what I would consider a "First-time MINI wrenching project"), $1600 is more than little excessive.

You need to have some clarification from the service department. Do they mean the supercharger water pump drive gears are bad as in this case https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ater-pump.html , or do they mean the water pump alone should be replaced?

I've encountered a few failed supercharger water pump drive gear instances, the supercharger must be replaced, but only one failing water pump. My squealing water pump is the only case I've ever heard of so I consider that to be rare.

Yup. I'd be interested to hear how they determined that you water pump needs to be replaced as soon as possible. Did you hear a new noise? Did your temperature climb? If your pump is indeed bad, it doesn't necessarily mean that your supercharger is bad. In any case, as has been said here, $1600 is way out of the ballpark for just a water pump replacement. Heck, I'll fly out there and do it for $1599.99

Good points... if the work includes a new or rebuilt supercharger as well as the water pump, then $1600 isn't a bad price.

Looks like your water pump goes for about $215 + shipping (probably more like
$300 + tax at the dealer).
Here's one source. Bimmerparts is the same price as well.

I am starting to see some antifreeze on the passenger side of the engine under the Alt belt, I also see just a little steam when I come to a stop, no fluid on the garage floor as of yet. No squealing from the belt either. The over flow tank was about 8 ounces low so I know I am losing it someplace. No high temps as of yet as I have 1 eye on the scanguage. Is this normal for a 42K 04 MCS to need a pump or could this be something else going on ?. I called Mini and set up an appt, Hopefully it holds up for 2 weeks and I dont get stuck on the road

WP is pretty much in the middle of the engine - on the end of the supercharger.

Fourblades - get a second opinion, as those above say, the line you're hearing doesn't make much sense.
