paying vender or not, a misplaced ad such as mrdimples does nothing for his business or this thread. i have nothing against his product but the fact that he will shamelessly advertise on an irrelevent topic makes me want to purchase the product hes selling from almost anyone but him. or maybe its just me...

k9mini, the last time i broke in a cam? none yet. I understand your point of the plug being a nice little safegaurd when installing a cam however after reading mrdimples post, i dont even know that that point crossed his mind while he typed that ad.

Look guys, I got the hint, I apologize if one misplaced post upset anyone. I guess I am so passionate with what I do, I might have a tendency to overrev.
The whole thread was about maintenance and extending the life of the vehicle and I am a believer in getting ferrous metals out of the oil, that's all.
You will not be hearing from me again. Please find something more positive to write about, Good Bye and God Bless.

we have a roller cam

so the creation of nasties is greatly reduced when compared to older non-roller technologies.

At the risk of actually being helpful...

That knocking you are describing is something I once had on my MINI. Took it to the dealer and the replaced one of the "Axel Nuts"... Yeah, real descriptive but that is what it said on the service form. I was able to show this to my dealer by putting it in reverse, loading the drivetrain in an aggressive manner (like making a fast launch but then not launching), then doing the same thing in first. You can get the noise everytime like that if you have the same problem I did.

Oh, and...

^ An axle nut is simply the nut at the end of the axle. Pull off your wheel, or pull out your wheel's center cap if you can and you'll see a BIG nut in the middle of the hub. It is true that this nut being loose can cause a noise. When I had my S2000 there was actually a TSB for that particular nut for people getting a clunk when changing from forward motion to backward motion. The TSB simply said that the 180ft/lbs of torque holding the nut on should be increased to 240 ft/lbs

You can try simply replacing that nut, they are typically supposed to be replaced any time you remove them, and torquing it 20 or so ft/lbs over spec (depending on what spec is). I know on the S2k they were ~ $4.50 per nut so not overly expensive...you just need a good torque wrench.

Or you can remove your wheel, pop your center cap out, buy the nut, bring the nut to a local mechanic, ask them to remove the one thats on there and put this one on to this torque setting. It would take them all of 5 minutes.

Oh and a couple years after I replaced my axle nut on the S2k I went to take the axle off because I broke it. Well that higher torque setting really was a difference. I broke two 1/2" drive 3" extensions and then actually broke the 1/2" drive breaker bar...luckily all was craftsman! But yea, towed it to a mechanic and his impact wrench BARELY got it off...he had to turn it to ~ 160psi and run it for a good 10 sec before it budged!

Ok rant off now...good luck

And jhud, I am not ashamed to be a PAYING VENDOR on this site, actually I am proud to have helped so many nam members.

Then maybe you need to stick to the more pertainent threads instead of spamming others.

Alright Bigshot, he already got the message. Your post reminds me of a movie barfight. You know, when everybody's gotten their ***** kicked and the final punch is landed, then someone yells out "Okay, let's break it up...break it up."

Sorry FD, replied w/o ready all of the posts.

You can go back to hall monitoring now.........

jhud, keep the MINI and just budget for the occasional fix. I have 2 cars at home that are both over 15 yrs old. They need a bit more maintenance than a new one would, but I know both cars inside and out. So repairs are usually a quick and fairly painless ordeal.

Oh, I just felt a little pity, thats all, plus I've always wanted to use that analogy in a post.

He realized he was wrong, thats all i can ask for. I appreciate his apology and perhaps will purchase something from him sometime. He COULD have dodged the issue with all honesty and it took a decent guy to step forward and say sorry so i feel the issue should be burried.

as far as the axle nut i will put it on the list of things to check when i next lift the mini. Its soooooooooooooooooooooooooo appreciated guys.

as far as a status update i talked with Jan from RMW and he says that i can put the cam in and be ok. geez......it seems like i have been hearing about this "remote tuning" capability since i bought the mini. I would LOVE to actually be able to do it!
In the mean time I KNOW A DYNO TUNE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!! but what software is good out there? Dinan is crap and Alta piggy back chip has too many issues ive read about? Jan cant/wont promote anyone elses software for obvious reasons and i understand that but whats a actually pretty good " canned tune " out there GIAC?

There are others that tune with the same Dimsport software, and do a great job with it. They tend to be a bit more conservative with the tunes witch for a street car can be a very good thing. Vitesse Pro does my race car.
Also, there are other cam options that you may want to look into. May want to go direct to Newman cams and might save $100. I am very happy with my Schrick on the race car at this time.

Around your area is tough. Only a handful have this sofware as far as I know.
I know that you can get a good tune and RPM upgrade just by sending your ECU to Vitesse Pro, I think. Not optimum by any means, but better then other options.
Contact Vitesse Pro and see what he says. He's in the Vendor Directory here.

RMW can do that too, but he doesn't since it is not optimal for the car.
