Drivetrain Launch tips for best 0-60
Launch tips for best 0-60
Hey,
I have recently purchased that Dynolicious software for my Iphone that calculates your 1/4mile time and BHP (somehow!) However accurate/innacurate it is, I cannot get my 0-60 time lower than 6.8seconds, with most runs being around 7.5 seconds...
Im running quite a few mods and would have expected to see a lower time
Can anyone give me launch tips as at the moment I am just spinning my front wheels in first and second gear. Also should I take it all the way to the redline, or should I be shifting early etc?
Any help at all would be great!
Thanks!

I have -
DDM Works RIS CAI
3" Turbo Back Exhaust
ECU Reflash
35mm H&R springs
18" JCW Wheels (probably heavy?!?) with non-runflats @ 36psi all round
Full tank of fuel (literally 99.99% full, I had filled up about 2 miles before doing this test..)
Running on 99RON fuel
1 person in car only (the driver)
Very little luggage
outside temperature was cold, 2degrees celcius
sport mode on, dsc off
windows up, A/C off
etc etc
I am running 225bhp and 262lb-ft torque dyno tested

Your times seem to be in the ball park:

Well, a 2.73s 60' time leaves a lot of room for improvement.
Obviously low-profile tires, cold temps, etc, don't help with launching, but you should be able to cut nearly several tenths off of that time and that will trickle down to even bigger improvements in all the following times.

I varied it really. Mainly launched between 2000 and 3500rpm though, no higher. Yeah pretty much dropped the clutch, as soon as I heard the beep saying start the test, i dropped the clutch and planted the right foot.
All runs has DSC off

I almost always slip the clutch, and dont drop it. There is just to much torque if I drop it it spins a nice quick slip usually does the trick and as soon as I have it engaged i nail it. it still spinns sometimes but not as much.
Surely it's all in your launch and your tires or the iPod (in)accuracy. With that power you should be able to get sub 6 seconds with a good launch.
edit: Just noticed you said BHP not WHP. Still should be able to get close to 6 secs.

I run 15.4 - 15.8 sec quarter mile at about 96 MPH in my stock Clubman so you should definitely be running better times than you seem to.
EDIT: Clubman S that is
Again the inaccuracy at of the Dynolicous is probably the biggest error.
Ive got good tyres, although they are nearing the end of their life
Falken Fk452's
I will try slipping the clutch tomorrow, but what rpm should i be launching at and should I be WOT in 1st etc? Just general advice is needed!
Thnx for the replies

I am trying to do this from memory, But I think I start at about 2500 rpm. then let it slip very quickly and once its in gear i give it about 85% throttle and work my way all the way down.
launching mini's suck =[ i think I just miss cable throttle.... or maybe im new to fwd.. anyways, ive found that WOT right away in 1st gear doesn't work too well for me, Im still on horrible run flats too, that might be a reason
futureal33, you might be able to get better times with sport mode off. It's very hard to keep traction in first or second during WOT with it on. As far as best launch RPM, your ECU retune has changed that from stock but it's probably somewhere between 3-4K RPM.
for those of you guys who say the app is inaccurate... check this out

by laying into the gas enough to hold 3-4K RPM as you release the clutch you force the car up to speed as the drivetrain connects. If it just wants to spin away then lower your launch RPM, but how well you modulate the release of the clutch (dont drop it too fast) as you push the gas pedal determines how quickly the car launches and whether or not you push too hard and cause wheel spin. You shouldn't be at WOT until after the clutch is completely released. My tires will hold at WOT in 1st but if you find that they're breaking free even up in the high RPM range you'll have to hold back a little until you've shifted into second, maybe just slightly less than WOT so you don't trigger the overboost. Also your shift into second gear should be similar to the first, holding the RPM higher as you release the clutch to get a little more pull out of the car. With sport mode off it's easier to keep traction with these techniques.
Hmmm...

Hmmm...
I'd reckon anyone that can get a 2.5 60' time is doing just fine. Most likely the only way to get much lower would be to run drag slicks or use reverse.
My own approach is to release the clutch fairly swiftly at about 3,500 RPM and let the front tires spin a turn or two off the line. Once the car is moving the tires will hold full throttle. Feathering the clutch might be a touch faster, but I'd like to point out that I have not yet had to replace a clutch in 110k miles and five years of autocross. Tires are way cheaper and less bother than clutches, right?
But hey, different strokes right?

Just my .02, but are we talking wheelspin, or a little chirp? I haven't done a dynolicious run yet, so I have no numbers.. but: wheel spin is wasted time, lost traction, and increases shift time- Dumping the clutch to start is not.. great.. on any of the drivetrain, and if it results in wheelspin- see above.
I have had the best results with a little clutch slip in first, maybe 80% throttle to maybe 4000rpm.. make the shift to second quick, and the tach should have only dropped to ~3200, so peg the right pedal and get a single 'chirp'.. wind second up harder than first, then make the shift to 3rd (around 5000rpm?) really count- thats where the best traction/boost ratio happens, I think. from there on out, ~6000rpm is probably as far as it should go.
I'd avoid the redlining- I am pretty sure on a hp/tq curve, there's more fun a gear up by then.
but again - different techniques... I do believe this is why people have a go at the stoplight, no?

on my R56 with alta CAI, custom turboback exhaust, helix SSK, and stock crown spokes w/stock runflats, i managed to get a 5.5 in 0-60 on a nice summer evening. im not sure HOW, but i did! i was using a G-Timer. i did it three times, first time was my 6.1 run with some spinnin of the tires, second run was 5.7 with less spinning, and my final run was my 5.5 with little to no spinning, straight grip. if i recall correctly, DSC off and sport mode OFF aswell, but dont kill me if im wrong!
