Drivetrain LOSS of power from exhaust?
LOSS of power from exhaust?
how much, if any, power loss should i expect if i have a crack on a weld in the y pipe in my cat back? think i may just get a new exhaust since i bought this Invidia used and that makes it 4 years old already. i like the idea of the one-sided ones like Alta and Ireland kits.
Hey Disco...
We might all find out very shortly... since OctaneGuy found a crack in his Invidia resonator also... and had it replaced with a Borla resonator instead!
He says it feels like it has more power... and will probably see the dyno again soon!
Not sure which thread it's in... but it's a recent post of his.

lowering back pressure does not equal power loss
I would think that unless there is a leak in the header section where you want a more controlled flow and interaction from cylinder to cylinder, that a small leak rearward of that will not have much of an effect on power levels.
If anything, if the leak is severe enough it could lower back pressure resulting in slightly more power, but not less.
Theoretically, all aftermarket exhaust systems release power by lowering back pressure. An exhaust leak is the least path of resistance, hence lowering back pressure even more. So, an exhaust leak cannot cause a power loss. I am sure it could result in a crap sounding exhaust system, but not power loss.

because when i was at Helix last summer, Eric saw that one of my rear hangers was broken off and the tips were hanging crooked. Eric welded it back on but did not do such a good job (not blaming him btw, he did me a favor). When he welded it back on he welded it too far back from where it should have been and the stress is what probably caused the crack. so says the muffler shop anyway. so, my exhaust has other problems, and i would like to try something else being that i did get this one used on the cheap.

Actually with the leak there is a loss of gas velocity whih lowers hp as the engine cant breathe as well...

yeah, let me know... i just need to know where the crack is from pics...
I have an exhaust leak on my 02 MCS and was wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I haven't had it looked at by a shop yet, but was hoping to just get a quick fix. My car sounds like crap and the fuel intake is definitely different!!
