This is all Jan's fault for over delivering.

What's the deal with the Harmonic Balancer?

I had the exact same thing happen to me last friday, only the belt snapped and got stuck waiting for a tow back to the dealer. My MCS has about 36k on the clock.

Same exact thing happened to me today - 2006 MCS, 68,000 miles on original damper/crank pulley. Oy.

Just put the Thumper head on last week. That plus all my other mods plus copious hammering on the throttle killed it dead.

We took in our other S to the dealer for the same code three times. First time they changed the bpv, second time they reflashed the ecu, and third time the throttle body got changed. Its been two weeks and it's fine so far.

Blimey, Let me know if I can get you the ATI Damper to fix your car, I have em in stock. They are the best replacement for the stock damper.

Thanks for the posts Richard! I had the same symptoms and reading your post helped me get past some of the other potential causes of the P1688 code (bypass the bypass valve). Crank pulley was replaced today and all is well.

If I had known this was coming, I would have ordered the ATI Pulley. As it turned out, I had to use the readily available OEM part instead.

Got to love the NAM community!
