Split Second FTC1 question

Has anyone had any experience with the Split Second FTC1?
http://splitsec.com/products/fueltime.htm
My cousin, who runs a VW/Audi/BMW shop in town has just installed one in an '84 E30 BMW with twin turbo kit, and he's having good results. It taps in to the stock ECU and tweaks with signals such as tach, MAF, etc...
What I'd like to know is if the Mini is too smart for this kind of piggyback... will it compensate for the altered signals? It's a great deal, about $400, and is laptop programmable, which beats the pre-programmed stuff from UniChip etc... I just don't trust the idea of a pre-programmed system, just because we all know every car, climate, and even fuel (depending on where you live) is different.....
