just a thought on heat control

so lately i have been trying to controll the heat in my engin bay, especially as it pretains to my intercooler. as heat rises, it seems that a good deal of that heat comes through the top of the motor where the injectors and fuel rail sit, under the intercooler, and heat it up pretty quickly, even with an alta diverter on top. i was wondering if a division between intercooler and motor would be beneficial, somthing like a header blanket directly under the intercooler.my only concers are that keeping the heat on the fuel rail will cause problems and that the material will restrict airflow. any oppinions, comments or suggestions would be great. thanks

M7 Already makes such a product. Known simply as the 'aerogel engine blanket'. Weather it works or not...i have no idea.

The M7 product is to be used only with their DFIC.

You don't want to put anything between the IC and the engine as it will decrease or block airflow thru the IC.

I addressed the problem of engine heat reducing IC efficiency in this thread:

you could also use this product with altas TMIC, basically the same thing

but yeah i was thinking about having another air intake to blow off the underside of the intercooler to vent off the hot air? maybe with a simple bolt on part directing just a little bit of the air flow through the grill from the radiator up to the underside of the intercooler maybe???? just a thought

vendors should pick up on that idea and patent it before i do, by the way haha

ok, so wehile on the subject of heat controll, would changing the coolent resevior tank to an aluminum tank help to lower coolant temperature? thanks

Is the coolant temperature a problem? No need to fix it if it ain't broke. Read all the posts about the 180F thermostat to get an idea of creating problems with a solution to a non-problem. I sense that most people with the low temp thermostats dont have them anymore.
A big solution would be to exhaust all the under-bonnet hot air in a more efficient manner.

Closer to more recent threads: You may think about the heat device to cover the area only under the IC. Worry about the temperatures of the IC with a water meth system? You can also wrap the fuel rail to protect it from heat.
It has been reported on many threads that there is a extreme limitation of cool air coming in from the front of the Mini to help remove the heat. Try something new?

I think inimmini got it right a while back. Maybe doing what he did and adding additional cooling duct to that will help.

While these are very old debates the one fact is that adding ducts will do very little below 40 mph.

True for a MINI with the stock radiator support/hood seal ...but not with this setup...

The "little scoop" never came into being commercially.
I believe it was a benefit, or as PGT said - it didn't hurt.

i have decided to steal a little from everyone. im going to cut the center out of that piece of plastic blocking the IM but leave the shell, IE the wether stripping across the top and the extra duct for the airbox. the new hole should allow more air in wit the help of a duct. did you see any differance with that plate infront of your radiator from M7? thanks
