Dinan CAI owners ring in!!!

Just looking for info on the intake from someone using it.

It seems from the limited pics out there that this intake only draws air from a 1x6 opening in the box. if so how will that compare in performace to other like alta and madness?

Second to do modify or remove the cowl when installing this and can u modify it if u dont take it out to allow more air in?

Have you noticed a performace increase for the money spent?

thanks in advance,

<half a ring>

Used to have a Dinan, now have a JCW.

It seems from the limited pics out there that this intake only draws air from a 1x6 opening in the box. if so how will that compare in performace to other like alta and madness?
Not really true. The box draws air from three places:
1) the opening you describe (which I think is a bit bigger than 1x6)
2) the "snorkel" from the front grille (same as the stock airbox)
3) a grommet hole from the lower half of the airbox to the cowl (same as the stock airbox)
It has PLENTY of space through which to draw air, considering the sum of all these is quite a bit larger than the throttle body opening.

Second to do modify or remove the cowl when installing this and can u modify it if u dont take it out to allow more air in?
Yes - you cut a notch out of the top of the cowl to enable the Dinan box's extension to extend into the cowl area.

Have you noticed a performance increase for the money spent?
Well..... I'm not a big believer in CAI's making power all by themselves... perhaps a tiny bit... and the difference between any two CAIs is going to be minimal, IMHO. Now, add a pulley and exhaust, and the combination actually does something. The CAI does "sound faster"... if that's what matters. I consider the Dinan and JCW boxes superior to the sheet metal boxes, because they better resist heat soak in real world stop-and-go environments.

FWIW, I switched to the JCW to help reduce the amount of throttle whistle my car exhibits - not a problem with the airbox, but I wanted something to better muffle the low-RPM whistle from the throttle plate... only the JCW does this.

I've got a dinan and I love it. Like the above poster said, the intake area is already bigger than the throttle body. Truth be told, I think most of the intakes are pretty much the same as far as power gains go. Most of the difference is just fanboys try to justify the price. Some of them are louder, some are easier to maintain, and some are made of solid unobtainum, etc. really, there are no "bad" intakes out there, they all work, and all will give you a return for your investment. In the end, find the one that fits your budget, and go from there.

I'm thinking about purchasing the Dinan over the JCW. On OutMotoring the JCW is $275, while Dinan's site has their version listed at $180.

Why such a price difference? I thought Dinan was expensive...Is it because it's just the box and filter and not any tubes etc.?

use a flat head and twist and it pops off, and use channel locks to reconnect it, has worked wonders for me so far.

I love my dinan intake its clean looking and adds a liitle more power (just a little) I love how it sounds and how it looks install is a cake walk. Im not sure how much diffrance I felt as I got the exhaust, intake, and software (stage 3) all at one time. I think its well worth the money only bad this is I dont know if the filter is reusabe, but Im going to get a IGT filter when Im due for a replacement as its washable.

Here's the documentation that came with my CAI. Be sure to reproduce the template from this link http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...n/IMG_8744.jpg in full size (100%) for it to be to the correct scale then check it against the CAI lid before making your first cut (measure twice, cut once). Good luck! You're going to love the sound if nothing else.

... and careful installing that piece of "channel rubber" (weatherstripping)... as you bend it, it will expose SHARP edges of the internal reinforcement... very easy to get cut on these.

I just installed my Dinan CAI as well and it was a piece of cake. I love the way the Dinan box doesnt draw attention and looks OEM.

One question, did the top over of your Dinan fit better without using the rubber gasket around it? I couldnt get the top to fit properly with the gasket, however when I removed the gasket, it fit perfectly. Curious to see if anyone else had the same experience.

JCW has the fancy flap and says JCW on it.

Really happy with the Dinan. ITG makes a cool foam filter for it too.

What's the part number for that filter?
Anyone know of any other replacement filters that will fit and might be less expensive?

Habanero,

Thanks for the air filter ifor.... I keep a little notebook next to my computer labeled "MINI." I write down anything form NAM and other sources that is helpful or cool. So in went this infor. I done some research on foam vs paper filters and actually the foam is supposed to be better. It doesn't "channel" tiny holes like paper.

I think the Dinan CAI is way cool. I actually like the thottle body/intake noise. I think Dinan says the CAI makes about 8hp, but I think that is with their ECU remap which for me is a little pricey...Thanks again for the infor.

The Mini Dealership gave me one of these after a blown cylinder head, combined with issues getting in new parts, etc... I'm looking forward to installing but I have a question. Is there any way, and any benefit thereof, to more directly channel air from the cowl scoop (in my case) or vent, straight to the box's snorkel? Or would doing this limit air/serve no purpose/etc... I'm thinking of like a duct from scoop to box. Any feedback appreciated.

I have one.....install it the way it is made....it is great....more zip to you ride, and just a little whine.....good for long rides....but all the ++ of a CAI, with less boy racer sounds...just enough sounds for some situations(around town, etc), but not annoying for hours of driving like other CAI.

Ive had the Alta, the K&N H.A.I. set-up and now DINAN. The latter is definitely my favorite.
