Drivetrain Which Red Line Oil for Factory Limited Slip?
1985,
I spoke with Dave (from Redline) a few minutes ago and these are his recommendations:
A direct replacement to LT3 is D6ATF which is the lowest viscocity.
You can also use D4ATF which is mid viscocity.
Lastly, MTL is also fine which is highest viscocity.
All three redline products are fine for the transmission. The only real difference is in the cold weather/temperatures when the high viscocity might result in a slightly more difficult shifting.
Hope this helps.

Based on BMW's TIS recommendations, it would appear MTL would be appropriate for use with the OEM LSD. MTL is the same visocosity as MTF-94 which is recommended for the Getrag 6spd with LSD (and pre 7/04 non-LSD models), LT-3 is a lower viscosity (like ATF) and recommended for the non-LSD for models after 7/04.
This was copied from a recent BMW TIS.
5 spd Midland up to 7/2004 MTF-94
5 spd Getrag Convertible from 4/2004 MTF-LT-3
Saloon from 7-2004 MTF-LT-3
Convertible from 9/2006 MTF-LT-4
6 spd Getrag GS6-85 BG/DG
Up to 7/2004 MTF 94
From 7/2004 MTF-LT-3
6 spd Getrag GS6-55 BG, GS6-53 BG/DG

Redline MTL is a very good match for Texaco MTF-94
for Midland MC or 1st gen MCS with LSD or the early Getrags before LSD came out.
Redline D6 is a good match for BMW-MTF-LT-3
for later 1st gen MCS without LSD.
Redline doesn't currently have a good substitute for LT-4.
