Drivetrain 30-70mph 3rd gear times
30-70mph 3rd gear times
A popular thread on the Mini2 (R53 tuning) site is 30-70mph times (http://www.mini2.com/forum/engine-dr...ear-times.html).
As not many people in the UK are tuning their R56 yet, I find myself frequenting NAM more than M2 as there seems to be a much bigger 'tuning' market over here
Thought it would be good if we could set up a thread listing peoples 30-70mph times - for R56 (all models) only.
The rules are just that it has to be done on a straight flat road and in 3rd gear... thats it! Obviously, honesty is paramount and all findings should be supported by a video of some kind if possible, or a print out from a time recording equipment..

I tried to get the mobile phone to record the time, but it just ended up being too bright and not recording properly and blocking half of my speedo! You can see the 30-70 pretty easily though.
Times were done in miliseconds using Windows Movie Maker, I got 30mph @ 0.2:03 and 70mph @ 0.7:10 .... which works out at exactly 5.07seconds (or 5.1 rounded up
)
Mods are listed on the video
Please feel free to reply to with your own times! Look forward to seeing some replies soon

Hey..... I saw a post by futureal33, and did the test. It took some practice to get consistent, I got runs of 5.28s, 5.34s, 5.28s, and 5.34s, for an average of 5.31s.
I do have 2 later back-to-back runs of 5.16 & 5.13, but I will have to do another test with 4 runs, in order to verify.
Hope some others will chime in.......

06 Cooper S with JCW Tuning Kit and Custom CAI.
3rd gear, sport on, traction off, just me in the car, less than 1/4 tank of UK standard petrol (95 ron I think).
Several runs shot with my digital camera sandwiched under the passenger head rest, then reviewed on the PC with Windows Movie Maker.
Gave an average 30-70mph of 5.5 seconds over seven runs.
The video wasn't great quality and it would likely be more accurate to time the speedo whilst sitting in the car... But its in the ballpark of 5.5 seconds.

Maybe, but you would have to do the 2nd to 3rd gear shift. So numbers would be all across the range due to different drivers.
In 3rd gear, you can go from 30-70 and take the human element out. You just mash the pedal and make your time.

Just did a 30-70mph Pull in 3rd gear. My time was recorded with a computer stop watch.
I'm getting between 5.15 and 5.25

Unfortunately, this test only works on the non-automatics. The auto prevents you from hitting redline and cuts power at about 6150 RPM which is hit prior to reaching 70. I am curious to see what the time would be though so sometime within the next week I'll stop by somewhere and buy a stop watch so I can see what the times are with the auto shifting gears in the run.

I just got back from giving this a try. As I previously stated the auto transmission will not stay in 3rd gear for this as it cuts power prior to redline which is before hitting 70.
I pressed the sport button and turned the DSC off. I went into manual shift mode at around 20 MPH and put it into 3rd, I then put it back to auto so it would shift into 4th instead of cutting power near the end of the run.
I performed 4 timed runs. My times were (from quickest to slowest):
4.82 seconds
4.87 seconds
4.90 seconds
4.94 seconds
This was timed with a hand held stopwatch while watching the center speedo.
EDIT: I'm sure once my slightly lower peak boost issue gets resolved the times would be even slightly quicker. I had an update to my MINIs software installed by my MINI dealer about a month ago. After they serviced it, I could only attain 16 PSI boost instead of my previous peak of 20.5, I'm now back in the 18 PSI range after tightening up all of the hose clamps.

It would be nice if I could get a video, but I don't have the means to capture one. I know doing it with a hand held stop watch isn't as accurate as you have to account for reflexes when pushing the button instead of being able to show actual timing from a video.
Needless to say, I have a lot of torque (courtesy of ALTA and lot lighter wallet). My dyno charts are posted on the ALTA website here.
I only did the timings since Li'l Red's Rider requested them in the "who else has 0-60 in under 6 seconds" thread.
. It's good to see you are still around on NAM. I'm not around quite as much as I used to and I tend to be bit more selective now in the threads I peruse due to having less time available. It was great to meet you in Vegas!
