How to tell the difference between 6-speed boxes?

How can you tell the difference between facelift and pre-facelift MCS 6-speed gearboxes?

I have two boxes sat here, and the only difference seems to be the final drive. The one box has 85 teeth, and the other has 89 on its final drive. The number on either box dont match any part number as BMW or RealOEM.com.

So which one is the facelift box, and is there any other way to tell?

My early gearbox(Oct 2004 build date) has 85 tooth crown wheel gear. My 3rd/4th/Reverse mainshaft pinion gear has 21 teeth. My 1st/2nd/5th/6th mainshaft pinion gear has 31 teeth.

I'm curious, what are the pinion gear tooth counts for both mainshafts on your late 89 tooth crown wheel gear gearbox? Thanks!

I guess you have managed to get an early gearbox on a facelift car? I thought the change was June/July 2004.

I am taking the BKD box back on Saturday, so when I crack open the casing on the new box I'll try to remember to count the teeth for you.

Ok thanks Bhozar. If I remember correctly, in Canada the facelift builds started to be delivered in January of 2004. BTW I can reach 70 mph in 2nd gear so I've got an earlier gearbox.

Do you mean January 05 was delivery of facelift cars in Canada?

I suppose if it was June/July 04 for facelift in the UK, that cars would have already been built ready for the US market if they were needed August.

Hey Bhozar, did you ever count the two pinion gears on that late box?

I forgot to count, but I did take a picture from the top down, so you can count them.

I think you'll find they are the same, and its just the final drive that differs.

The final drive on this box had 89 teeth, and an LSD. It had BKL on its sticker.

Forgot to say, 'BKE' or 'BKL' (With LSD) on the sticker and/or 89 teeth on the final drive shows a box is a facelift.

Always double check, as I bought the last box from a MINI breaker, and asked him multiple times if it was a face lift box. He pointed at the sticker on the box and said, "It says BKD, and that means its a facelift." Could have been a mistake, but that means the guy doesnt have a clue, or he lied to me. Hes been in the trade for a few years so I think its more likely to be the latter.

Thanks for the pic Bhozar. Yeah there's 31 teeth on the 1/2/5/6 mainshaft pinion in your photo(just like my gearbox). The 3/4/R pinion is obstructed in the pic from getting a count. I think you're right though; it seems like it's just the crown wheel gear that's different between these gearboxes.

Simple math tells me that pre-facelift FD ratios are 2.74:1 for 1/2/5/6 and 4.05:1 for 3/4/Reverse.

Facelift FD ratios are 2.87:1 for 1/2/5/6 and 4.24:1 for 3/4/Reverse.

Anybody know if that is right?

LSD trans

I just bought a transmission that's said to be a 05' LSD trans. It has part #'s 2300-7541423-01 and 0014822 BKL on the sticker. If I'm reading the above posts correctly does the BKL mean it's definately a late model LSD?
Thanks for the help. The trans will soon be going into my 03' S.

BKL would be the facelift gearbox with a LSD.

From my MINI2 reply:

"Ok so for all years if the input shaft, plus all gears and pinion gears are the same then that chart seems off for 3 gears. I only quickly calculated for just the swap of crownwheel gear from 85 teeth(pre facelift) to 89 teeth(post facelift).

I'm calculating facelift gearbox overall ratios for:

1st gear I come to 11.96:1 not 12.789:1(based on my 12 tooth input to 50 tooth 1st gear).

2nd gear I come to 7.52:1 not 7.793:1.

Reverse I come to 11.65:1 not 11.944:1(based on my 33 tooth reverse and 50 tooth 1st gear).

Bhozar do you have any more top down pics of your facelift gearbox? Then we could easily figure out 1st and Reverse ratios.

Jeremy"

Yes final drive ratio/differential ratio is ratio of pinion gear to crown wheel gear revolutions.

The numbers are above Pure13, but for you I'll copy n paste.

Pre-facelift FD ratios are 2.74:1 for 1/2/5/6 and 4.05:1 for 3/4/Reverse.

Facelift FD ratios are 2.87:1 for 1/2/5/6 and 4.24:1 for 3/4/Reverse.

See post #14 too for revised facelift overall gear ratios.
