Hey everone,

It's a lovely sunday night, and I have the creative juices flowing right now. So it occured to me why not make an intake for the mini just for fun. So I was hoping if anyone had any pics and possibly some measurement's of their intakes they have or are going to put on their mini cooopers, any help would be great.

Cheers
Vik

I'll bite. Akimoto racing filter 3in opening, Akimoto step down coupling 3-2.5in. then a K&N downpipe.

Me too, what is the inside diameter of the stock intake hose where it attaches to the airbox I haven't cut my clamp yet. Who sells 3/8" wide SS hose clamps or a tool to replace the stock one, Akimoto step down couplingsnull 3/8" wide
I intend on building a box add on like the MADNESS with a K&N from from my previous car. Will also mod the firewall panel for more air.

I built my own cold air intake similar to the maddness version. I used 2.75" OD aluminum tubing for the air filter. At the stock intake tube end I turned the OD down to 2.65", using a belt sander, to fit the stock intake hose. This gets you the largest inner diameter possible. Also the tubing I used was 1/8" wall. I made the box out of .050" thick sheet aluminum, (left over from a previous project). I used poster board to mock up the shape and size. To get the height of the box you can use plumbers putty rolled into a ball on top of the stock box. When you close the hood on the putty it will flatted out giving you the hood height. A local rubber supply house supplied the rubber seal used at the top of the box. Total cost for the materials was-

$25 for 25 ft of rubber seal (min order, used 1 ft)
$35 for 2 ft of aluminum tubing (I used only 2&quot
$55 for K&N filter
Total cost $115 with enough materials left over to make 10 more. I spent about 3 hours mocking up and fabricating the sheet metal box. Now that I have the template designed the box could be made in 1/2 hour with only hand tools. If you like to do things yourself and have the tools its well worth it.

sanddan, same plan as mine except the seal you can get at the salvage (junk) yard off of most any American car. It's the seal at the top of the firewall it seals the hood to engine compartment. No tools needed, just pulls off, paid $8.00 for mine and I thought that was a rip. A little degreaser and water looks like new.
You can also use aluminum foil crumpled lightly into a ball to get the hood clearance. It will compess then measure. mine will be made out of an old aluminum computer case. Anyone thinking about insulation, use an $4-5 dollar sun shade from Walmart, cut panels to fit and contact cement in on.
So did you measure the ID of the stock intake rubber hose if so could you post it.

Roth,
It is close to 2 5/8" at the inlet. This dia goes into the hose about 3/4" and then changes to 2.5". The 2.75" OD tube I used is 2.5" on the ID which matches the rubber hose. The rubber hose will stretch somewhat which is why I turned the tube down to 2.65". I might also try an enclosed box vs the current design since it does not completly seal out the hot engine air. That will definitely be more complicated to make.

has anyone thought of using a heat shielding material I believe it is like 1/4 inch thick aluminum/fabric and covering the existing aluminum madness shield and the piping?

sanddan, THANKS for that info. I have this aluminum solder that melts with a propane torch if you want a non removable top. Check it out > http://www.eastwoodco.com/email/default.asp?T1=19103
It is very strong I built a custom set of aluminum fog light mounts with it for my last car. Or a gasket-ed lid for a top use fender/door trim molding from PEPBOYS for gasket along the top edge and L tabs POP riveted on the inside level with top edge of sides with screws through the top to hold down.
Did you use a standard 3"x1/2" SS hose clamp ? I am looking for a narrower clamp(3/8&quot for a better fit in the recess on the stock rubber intake hose.
I find it hard to believe what K&N is asking for their intake or for that matter what any them are this is not rocket science. I can get the same results and save my money for the hard parts I can't fabricate.
