Going RMW but need a few opinions.

Hey everyone,

I finally got my finger out and now looking towards a few RMW goodies.

the following i will be purchasing:
  1. RMW head
  2. Head studs
  3. head gasket
  4. 17% pulley
  5. 535 belt
  6. RMW camshaft
  7. RMW 440cc Injectors
  8. RMW custom tune
I also have a full Milltek exhaust system including Header and an Alta v2 CAI

Just a bit worried. i want the power but i drive the car say 45miles ever day, i just want it to be reliable but have the juice there when i step on the gas. Has anyone fitted these items and had major problems?? or is it all sweet to add on.

Thanks for the input guys!!!

It will be as reliable as you want it to be...

Tons of people have added heads and other goodies to the engine and been fine for quite a while. I don't remember the mileage my car was at when I put a head on it, but it was so long ago that 1) I don't remember and 2) Jan wasn't running a business... And it hasn't been a problem for me. That said, if you pound the crap out of your car, it will wear out faster. That's just the nature of the mechanical beast....

Have at it, enjoy the new power. Be prepared to shorten tire life. learn to shift well (if you don't know already) to keep the clutch going for a long time. Change your oil regularly, and don't forget to floss and everything will be fine.... Even your teeth!

Yeah, he does. But you can't beat having him here in person. I haven't put his parts in yet. I just had to send a Clutch disc back to him so he can change it for me.

I'd lean toward the 15%. Similar list of mods netted me 239whp/195tq

I contacted all the BMW/mini garages in Sydney and none of them would install my Thumper head as it was not an "original BMW factory part".
Needless to say I will not be getting my car serviced by any of them.....

Yeah you'll find none of the Mini Garages over here will do any install of aftermarket parts. I just know this guy, which is a big plus for me

Just Got Mine Done a Couple of Weeks Ago

If you drive it the same, it shouldn't treat you bad. BUT, using the power is irresistible so you will be harder on the engine, trust me. As a daily driver in traffic, it's the same as before.
Jan posted my dyno plot a couple of weeks ago, I think I put it in my gallery.
I got 259whp and 209lb.ft. from the following;

All Jan's stuff,

Head
Cam
Full Exhaust
Tune
17%
440's

You'll love it.

Not when it comes to this. If they can't sell you the parts they aren't interested!!

hey guys i got a MINI R53 with a Bastuck Exhaust and the Alta 15% pulley reduction and i was also planning on making more power... A LOT MORE! haha Also, I read up on Jan's new TVS 1320 supercharger kit he's working on making! That looks very promising. I was planning on getting the RMW 2.0L head... or maybe the 1.6L? which do you recommend? and are there any other parts i should buy before i buy the head? I also wouldn't be able to get it tuned by Jan since i live in the Chicago area and Jan isn't making anymore come backs to the Midwest.

Thanks for the help!

First thing...

get a book on tuning cars and making performance cars out of streeters. Then,

The TVS1320 isn't for our cars, because it's too big. But it's the only one available now and is for testing stuff.

the head doesn't make the displacement, it's the crank and the block. Piston area x stroke x number of pistons makes the displacment.

To start getting power, add the pulley and the head. Eventually you'll need exhaust to get the peak numbers, the stock system is too small to really let it breath at the top end. Cam is optional, it's a good part, and if you're gonna do a head, that's a good time to do it, as you take the cam gear off to remove the head. Swapping the cam after that is about a 20 min effort.

Matt
