Drivetrain Best replacement filter for JCW airbox?
Here's the photo of the flap actuator and how it keeps the flap open all the time. Buy the Madness filter to support and thank them for enabling us to enjoy our MINIs even more. Better yet, buy two so you'll be able to clean one at your leisure. BTW, they are great guys and were at AMVIV again this year.
Enjoy!

Does anyone have the written instructions for the flapectomy? There were none included with the MINI Madness airfilter shipment.
Madness flapectomy instructions
Just go to their website and go to 'Links', then scroll down and they have a link to a pdf of their instructions.
It is really easy, and the whine is awesome.

I did not use the instructions from Madness. I found it easier to just remove the flap and leave everything else connected. If I ever want to put it back on I just have to deal with the flap and not the rest of the associated parts. I also did remove the plug from the box. I'm getting too old to remember where all the parts go, so KISS works for me.

The Mini-Madness filter is probably the least restriction, and won't shed tiny pieces of urethane foam into your intake.
The least costly option is to buy the appropriate K&N filter for around $30.
In any case, the flapectomy is totally worthless as to performance - it just makes more noise more often.
Oh, and BTW, you couldn't possibly measure performance differences between these filters without a flow-bench. The difference on the car is certainly not perceptible.

Do you have to do the flapectomy if you install the Mini Madness, or is it optional? Now that I've looked at both more completely, I'm leaning toward the Mini madness, provided the flapectomy isn't required (I'd just as soon leave the flap alone).
Why would the John Cooper Motorsport div run a flapless airbox if it provided no gains?
But not because it makes a difference to performance, IMHO.
I'm the guy who did the adapter ring for a K&N filter in the JCW - you don't need it.
Several members have used the $35 filter I described and just clamped it in place - the extra 1/8" diameter squeezes down no problem.
So for price/performance, the K&N is the one, while the Madness probably flows slightly better, and the flapectomy simply gives more noise more often, without any impact on performance. Personally, I'd avoid any foam filter.
Oh yeah, and anyone who tries to sell you a 4-HP intake hose is to be avoided...

I got mine from Ches Cain - 800-579-0580 or ches@syntheticwarehouse.com
Great guy to work with.
Mine was $50 + 6.40 shipping - but that was several months ago.
