Exhaust question

Hi Guys!

I have an 06’ Cooper S. I want to get the magnaflow exhaust for it, but I was reading online that if you take out the resonator and put a piece of a regular pipe in there the car will burble more and louder

What are the pros and cons of taking out the resonator?
Has anybody done it and where can I find some sound clips?

MUCH Louder. I had a simple magnaflow resonator installed and it got so annoying I cut it out and installed a Flowmaster Hushpower resonator. Driving on the freeway at 70-80 you'd have to shout to talk to someone else in the car.

Magnaflow on it's own is loud, I think you're crazy if you wanna pull the resonator off unless it's a full race car.

I'm pretty young (21) and love loud cars, but most people wouldn't even ride in my car because it's too loud to think.

I don't want it to be that loud. I seen video clips of the magnaflow on a track and it was nice. Is there anyway to increase the burble if I got a magnaflow exhaust

it's going to burble more when you put the exhaust on. no need to remove the center res. ive got a friend with the magnaflow and it burbles and spits and makes lots of noise

Add a header, and you will definitely amplify the burble...along with the exhaust note itself.
I have a header and Borla race cat-back, and it burbles great! If I accelerate hard, then let off the throttle quickly, it sounds like a gunshot.

Are there any headers out there under $700 and are worth getting? If so which ones are good. I saw Alta and Miltek, anything else out there?

lol i have a magnaflow on my 03 mcs and even with the stock headers it will burble something fierce but i love it....especially letting off the pedal in a tunnel or in a canyon that burble sounds so sweet....plus the tips really fill the exhaust port nicely

I have the Magnaflow exhaust with the OBX header and I am very very happy. The OBX is THE best header you can get for the money, $195.

Shall I consider other headers, like RMW? Please suggest as I'm on the way of installing a new header

I've heard an MCS with stock header and Magnaflow exhaust and it was nice.

Same owner added a Minimania header with no cat, it was very loud, could hear it from 3 blocks away or more.

Headers aren't the first thing to upgrade even at $195.

I'd do an RMW tune before any header.

The other exhaust that was nice with stock header was Borla Race.

Borla is the most close aftermarket exhaust to the JCW, even the look. Headers are good even on he beggining because they help off-loading the engine exhaust pump and make that path clearer. I see headers like CAIs, whenever done, they are a great value.

Talk to Jan but the RMW is the best header you can get and also cost about a grand if not more. If you have the money go for the RMW header.

Also, minihune mentioned getting a tune before the header, I would beg to differ, you need all your mods then get your tune from Jan so that everything is in harmony and all your mods are working great with the tune.

The RMW header is a full 4 - 1 race header with a Burnes collector on it and a race cat. The OBX is a simple slightly wider diameter piping stock replacement header. They're completely different.

The OBX header costs 200 + cost to weld the stock cat on.
The RMW header is bundled with a modified Magnaflow exhaust and I believe the retail price is $1999. I'll see if I can record a few sound clips of my exhaust and post them up sometime.

As Sharo said, the RMW header is one of the best you can buy. If you have the money, that's the one to get over the OBX.

Borla Race is a LOT louder than stock. You're thinking of their street system.

Borla Race with RMW Header:

What exactly is a RMW tune? Is it safe for the engine?

What is the budget and what is the timing for all these mods?

Big difference in prices and not everyone needs to do full upgrades.

RMW tune alone with 15% pulley will suit those on a budget.

If header is still on the upgrade list and within budget you could tell Jan you will be adding it or just do the tune and see what you think, odds are you will be happy enough without having to go beyond the stock header.

Jan can tell you if having the header will be a significant change for the versions of tuning he can do with software. You can tune then later add the header then retune if that is a problem.

In any event you need to set a budget and decide on an upgrade plan and timeline before making a decision. As you can see there are many further upgrades but for street driving less can be more. For track use, it's totally different.

The header will definitely benefit anyone, but it's geared more towards people who have a ported head.

In most cases the RMW tune (Or any proper tune) will correct stock problems and make the engine more efficient than it already is. From the factory my car was DUMPING fuel at about 3500 RPM's for absolutely no reason. We gained 50 ft/lbs of torque and 41 HP from 3.5k - about 5.3k RPM's by tuning out the "Lump". I also gained 25 "Peak" HP, and quite a bit of torque.

The tune is just a simple reflash of your computer, similar to what the techs at BMW do when new software comes out. It's completely safe.

DetroitTuned would have info on tunes. Jan sometimes will travel to do a tune if enough people are interested, I'm not sure how far you are from Helix's Shop, but it's usually easy to get people interested around there.

Headers? If you want cheap, the OBX is a good choice with your factory cat welded in, if you wanna spend some money, go with the RMW full header-back exhaust .

My next engine mod will be RMW tune + RMW header at the same time. I'll ask Jan to code in the his header part then. This would give me better boost at once than if I do them at 2 different steps. Right?
