obx header high flow cat question

i am about to purchase the obx header but would like to add a high flow cat to it instead of hacking the stock one off of the stock header...is there one that will easily be attached to the obx header while still having the bung for the sensor? If you know of one a part number/name/place to purchase would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

it just seems to me that most bought a high flow cat because it said high flow and the end diameters matched up. I have raised this several times yet no one can answer this question - can you tell me how you calculated it was high flow over the stocker and how much more flow over the stocker.

i didnt buy it to be "high flow", i just needed a cat so i didnt have to hack the one off of my stock header off. If its higher flow than the stock cat than thats a plus for me, but higher flow was not my intention for it, but rather a way for me not to mess with the stock cat.....

Well it just seemed to me that it would do the trick and it did,
This comment is there if you scrolled down the link I posted.

If I remember right this is sized for a 3.2L so on a MCS it's got the flow.
2-1/2" In/Out, with a single O2 sensor boss, OBD-II EPA Compliant
Funneled Flow Director On Inlet And Outlet For Maximum Flow
Heavy Gauge Stainless Steel Construction
High-Flow Monolithic Honeycomb Catalyst
Seam Welded Shell.

Its a GOOD and logical assumption that if its good for 3.2L then it will easily accommodate our 1.6L. I am just surprised that here on NAM it has not been defined more - i.e. what the stocker flows, what would be appropriate for a lightly modded car or heavily modded car. Perhaps it doesn't matter.

Does this aftermarket CAT bolt directly onto the OBX Header, or is there any welding to be done with this set up? Also any o2 simulators to deal with?

Just had the first CAT in my stock manifold blow apart on me Sat. night. just ordered the one from Helix with the high-flow Random Tech. Cat as a replacement. will write in with a full evaluation this weekend when i get it installed. the guys @ Helix said it will bolt right up in place of the stocker so i'm assuming both bungs for the O2 sensors and everything will be there. i'll try and take some pics too, you guys gotta see the CAT !

Perhaps the professionals will chime in on this but I was told by a good source that almost all after market cats do burn out. The stock cat is actually very well made and it holds pretty good under extreme heat. jm2c.

All cats burn out eventually....some faster than others. Random Technology cats are some of the best made. I would have one if I could afford it.

when using the obx header with an aftermarket cat, do these pieces bolt up and then bolt to the cat back or is there welding involved?

with the pic I just added for the Random Tech cat above...you can either weld flanges on or permanently weld them in place. I would put flanges on myself..

That's what mine looked like! They're not THAT expensive! Especially for someone that is doing a turbo build on a Cooper..... ( I think you still are...)

Just talked to Ralph at Helix about weather this cat is California legal. He was uncertain of this and I wanted to ask anyone here if they know this particular cat is California smog legal?

Thanks
Sharo

Well I know a ton of BMW guys (sc/turbo and FI) running these in Cali with no smog problems. It just needs an O2 bung welded in at some point.
