K&N Drop In plus Drilled lower Half?

Hey guys,
I have been contemplating doing a CAI for the past few months.I then read that a few people actually replace the stock air filter element with a K*N and then will remove the box near the fire wall. They then drill/cut the lower half of that(below the filter). To make a DIY intake? Is there any dyno gain to this?I would assume there is as its pretty similar to other intake designs.Only advantage i see is one is a cone and the stock uses a flat panel filter.

I use the drop in K&N in my R50 and it does make a difference in sound and power. I have them in all 4 of our vehicles!

I replaced my paper filter with the ALTA foam drop in & there was a noticable difference in power delivery & supercharger whine. Much more so than with a K&N.

Im going back and forth about the idea...I want to do this...NO i want to do a real CAI...etc.I found a good deal on a K&N drop in.I was gonna remove the whole intake system and modify the firewall panel and make it suck air from a larger hole.

Keep in mind that the "Real" CAIs out there are basically the same thing you can make out of the stock parts. A while back I read a test that said cone filters by them selves don't provide any advantages over a panel. The only time they do is when the cone is on top of a velocity stack. Othewise they usually provide a smaller filter area.

Let me know how it goes. I bought an extra firewall just for this but haven't had the time. This weekend I'm on a blackout mission.

wouldnt the CAI do a better overall job then modifying the stock box and fitting it with a different filter?

This is exactly what I was going to do. I'm too cheap buy an aftermarket CIA. I made my own instead!! As long as you open up the bottom part only, seal up the new opening to the "cowl" it should be an improvement. It will sound better too.

Here is a great How To from Randy Webb.http://store.webbmotorsports.com/for...topic.php?t=15

By the way. Did you get my e-mail, sent you a PM earlier?

I did just that to my stock airbox, and have been happy with the sound and feel. No dyno numbers, however. Using a dremel to cut larger holes will take far less time and provide more air than doing all the drill holes on mine, for example. Have fun with the mod!

Nice and sealed. 100% correct it's all about fun with mods.

but if you notice, he is using a cone filter. We are planning to use the drop in filter.

Yes but I'm selling my Flat K&N filter because I made my own CIA. He was interested in it but haven't heard back from him. Yes but the cowl mod will still help. Sorry for trying.
Pic is from my mock up. This one is for sale.
