Has anyone contacted Scorpion about product information? There website doesn't give a lot. I would be interested in the weight and any dyno numbers that they may have for the unit.

One thing I forgot to metion about this exhaust is that it looks identical to the Play Mini exhaust:

Oh, I'd also be up for a group buy with some sort of discount or shipping included. Bav's been sitting on these exhausts for awhile, so I see no reason why we shouldn't get a deal.

Yes. This was mentioned earlier. I wonder what's up with that. It's the same right down to the slightly oval tips.

Playmini does not have the price listed.

that link to mini2 for the playmini has some NICE sound/video clips.... you guys should check them out that were wondering.

i think it has a nice burble, and it does so everytime you let off the gas.... nice!
I would be curious about performance gains. it also said that no numbers or bhp increase is claimed, just "better performance". well i'll pay the extra 200 bucks to get another exhaust if i will get that 6 hp and 6 ftlbs..... whats the point in getting an exhaust if it doesn't yield any performance gains?

>>I will talk with Bavarian tomorrow in regards to a group by and will post here again. I live within 5 miles of them and lets see what they can do for us.

The suggestion for a group buy has been free shipping, but since I'm just a few miles away, I'd prefer to just go pick it up.

I've just called Bavarian and they'll do a group buy for $499 + shipping!

The catch is, they'll only accept payment from one credit card. Anybody that's interested, send me a pm or give me a call after 2 PM at (301) nine-nine-five 3 9 9 3 and we can try and work something out!

OK...let me get this right, all the members of the group buy will use one persons credit card for a bulk order? That is Barl Sheet !! It should be organized in a manner that would allow buyers to mention NAM and get the set group price. A. I would not want to give someone I don't know $550 and hope for the best B. I would not want to use my credit card and deal with a return issue or unhappy group buy member. I just made the purchase of a Borla Race system from Seven (nam sponsor) and though there was a delay due to lack of stock my exhaust was shipped Friday. I would warn those who don't like to wait to check the in-stock # of systems vs. backorder . I want it now with everything so group buys and "special prices on items not in stock or on order make me insane. Just be careful getting into these "deals" is all I am saying. I would have ordered the scorpion had I seen more about it sooner

They said shipping would be zip code dependent. It was going to be ~$35 to Maryland.

How about instead of a single credit card, which is ridiculous, we all call in our order and mention the NAM group buy. Then when they get enough people to call in, they charge us and ship the exhausts. How many needed for the group buy? The single credit card doesn't buy them anything, and it opens a lot of risk to everyone involved on our end. The risk isn't worth the $50 savings in my opinion.

The two proposals were, $499.95 plus shipping or $549 and free shipping. I like the $499 price better and will pay for shipping.

As far as the performance increase, I would be dubious on a lot of them. I would figure that this exhaust does have some increase, although we will need to dyno it. I would assume if it makes 4 or 5hp, then the @$250 savings over the rest are worth it. I personally think Randy's numbers are a little hyped up. No one has ever been able to get Randy's numbers, including other members on NAM and MINI2 and magazines. I think the tips on this exhaust are some of the best I have seen and the sound is quite good. I will save the $250 and put it toward the GIAC.

Fair enough, I'll call them back and see what I can work out. This is the first group buy I've participated in, so I wasn't sure what the normal procedures are

No problem. You are doing a good job. I think at this point after you organize a price to find out the following:

-Who do we need to ask for, for the group buy?
-How many people are needed for the group buy?
-What is the price (which you obviously have done)?
-How many do they have in stock and how long will it take to get more in (i.e. expected time of delivery of product)?

Thanks for doing this. I tried calling them this morning but was on hold for a while. I did call Scorpion though, and they do not have the weight or performance figures for the exhaust (although I am sure they do, just the technician didn't know it). Can you get Bavarian auto to tell us the weight of the system? Thanks.

I would estimate the following for the Scorpion exhaust for the MCS based on other exhausts that have been reviewed.

The scorpion-
-Costs less at about $499 to $549 compared to $795+ for some others.
-In design is similar to other dual muffler exhausts and so should weigh about the same or 10-12 pounds lighter than the stock dual exhaust.
- Should give some performance gains but the HP and torque numbers would just be a guess. You cannot tell by looking at it. You have to get it on a dyno and compare it head to head with the competition. Each dyno gives different numbers so to compare you have to do the tests with different exhausts in the same shop.
- Are Randy's numbers high? It doesn't matter if he does all his dynos the same way for each exhaust. Then it is the comparison that you have to look at. Even the best exhausts are only giving about 7-9 HP and 7 ft lbs of torque gain.
You cannot feel a difference under about 5 HP so if it gives anything near 4-5 HP and 5 ft pounds of torque you will be fine.
- The exhaust noise is pleasant and not too loud but it is not too quiet either.
- Is a common exhaust in the UK but is not the cheapest option.

Group buys-
Pay individually and identify yourselves as part of the group NAM buy.
Work out the shipping costs individually or offer free shipping as part of the deal.
Negotiate everything as a group.
Good luck.

Sounds like they're trying to discourage a group buy with such a moronic policy. It seems almost like they don't know the difference between a group buy and buying in bulk.

Well, I called them back and they weren't willing to flex on the "payment with one card" idea.

If anybody interested is a verified paypal user, I'd be comfortable proceeding with a group purchase using paypal & their buyer protection, but otherwise, I guess I'll just keep waiting for a reasonably priced exhaust.

How many people did they want for a group buy? Who did you talk to?

Ian was the sales rep I spoke with (ext 1251) and this buy was for the 4 remaining Scorpion Exhausts they had in stock, although I might be able to talk them down to 3 for the deal.

It sucks they're being such tightwads about it

I called them up as well and tried talking to another sales rep. I talked with Mike, but no deal. Anyway, I took the plunge and purchased it anyway. Even at $550 it is still a steal. Nothing else out there for the quality look and sound under $750 now. Anyway, it will be here on Friday. I will try to install as soon as possible and let you know what I think. I also have a High End DAT recorder with high end mics, so I can get a really good recording of the exhaust in pure digital sound. Even stereo if you like. I will also get a sound of the stock as well.

dgszweda1, you let the team down!!!

Just kidding - I may end up going the same route. I need to decide between the Magnoflow for $510 or the Scorpion for $550...

It is aggravating that there is no more information out there on this exhaust. There are good comments about the exhaust on VW and BMW's, but most of the comments are old. I asked Bavarian what the weight is, and all they could say is that they ship it and the entire container/contents are under 40lbs. So I would say about a 10lb savings over stock may be right. No dynos or anything else either. Also I am thinking that the Playmini exhaust may be the Scorpion exhaust and not the other way around. I will call both places tomorrow to investigate this further. I like the sound, the cost and the fact that it is british. Also, from Scorpion's sight it appears the exhaust has a lifetime warranty, but Bavarian didn't know what the warranty was. I just wish that people would know the products that they carry. This is another good advantage of smaller shops such as webbmotorsports or Pilo Racing. I will do some more investigation and let other's know.

I know I am late for today...I went to Bavarian today and spoke with Ian and Brian. They said they don't like group buys, (from their boss) and exactly what was told that all purchase under 1 name, they send to that individual and then whomever ships to everyone else. They had 4 in stock as of this afternoon and mine is sitting out of the box on the floor, will pickup tomorrow. Its a nice looking exhaust and the weight is roughly 30#'s, 4 pieces. Maybe we should have asked for a group discount instead of group buy.

Also they are selling a new style of Intake, but nothing made for the MINI as of yet. It looks sweet. Its made by AFE, protects the intake from heat as well. They sell their intake and said its not really worth it....nice knowing.

Anyway Brian is looking for a spec sheet on the Scorpion Exhaust and will send it to me once they get ahold of one.

Keith

It's usually best to quote one source : so from Webbmotorsports we have the following for comparison:

Brand/model- Price$ - HP/ torque gains by dyno- weight of system

Stock exhaust- no extra $- Baseline built into MCS- 46 pounds

Dual exhausts
Magnaflow- $500 approx- 10HP/ 6 ft lbs- 34 pounds
Borla/Street- $670- 7 HP/ 5 ft lbs- 34 pounds (Borla Race same price /weight, 9 HP/ 5-6 ft lbs torque)
UUC - $875 - 7-9 HP/ 7 ft lbs- 33 pounds
Milltek/Sport - $695- 9 HP/ 8 ft lbs- 31 pounds

Scorpion Estimates- $499 to $549- 5 to 7 HP/ 5 ft lbs- 34 pounds

Single exhausts
London Stainless/Quicksilver- $799 - 8 HP/6 ft lbs- 20 pounds
Alta /Sportone - $699 - 8 HP/5 ft lbs- 22 pounds

All estimates and dyno numbers are with intake and 15% reduction pulley installed.
