Drivetrain DIY Air Plate Diverter for < $2........
DIY Air Plate Diverter for < $2........
Not having $160 just laying around for the M7 product (Carbon Fiber isn't cheap to fabricate), BUT having some 2' long 1/8" expanded PVC sheets, ( http://www.mcmaster.com ) I decided to mock up a piece to mimic the function of the M7 Product.
I layed out the strip, notched it so it is a friction fit, Scribed the curvature and snapped it into place. Not bad for about 20 minutes of time and <$2 in materials. No temp test logging yet, but I'll do that eventually to see if it is as effective as claimed...

what width did you use? 12"? Are you concerned about heat?
Still an inexpensive mod...

I just cut a 3" strip from a larger piece I already had and use for another project so that's why the Estimated $2. I'm sure you could make this with any number of materials including aluminum sheet., but I had this lying around. I use expanded PCV (thicker) for endcaps in an intake I make for another brand. In this case, it is supported pretty good by the AC condenser and will be constantly bathed in ambient air so it probably will be fine...Just an experiment to see if it works....If so, maybe I'll fab up a fancy CF version, or cut one out of aluminum and powdercoat it black....

Nice! Prolly mor than 2 bucks though! Notice a difference? If so I'll refine this. Just doing some low to no buck experimenting now..

As a long time turd-polisher, I got to add this one to the list. I've done some stuff for no good reason, and my hat's off to you all for joining the club! As Rodney Dangerfield said to Ted Knight in Caddyshack: Looks good on you though!

M7 Says, "Installation will result in better airflow through the radiator, AC heat exchanger, and engine bay (this includes the heat-producing monster we know as the supercharger). Ultimately, the MINI owner will experience better response from the air conditioner, less heat soak in the engine bay, and even a cleaner engine bay because of the redirected air." http://www.m7tuning.com/parts/produc...products_id=25
Be sure to see the video too.
A local buddy got one and loves it and it does keep the engine bay very clean and he does claim to have seem his temp lower in the very hot summer with the A/C on.

As promised the $0 air diverter. Made from the scrap metal bin & painted with three 99% empty cans of flat black Krylon out of the trash.
It helps to have in-laws that own a NASCAR Grand National East Series race team.

Lexan huh? Cool. How did you get the tabs on there? Polycarbonate isn't the easiest thing in the world to bend.
Heating... :D 1 wire which get really hot.. keep it there where you want to bend it.. and TADAAA
After that.. vinyl stickers will do the rest
cheers
