How much HP can an auto tranny handle?
I have a 2006 MCS with the 6 speed auto trany & want to increase the horsepower & was wondering how much HP the stock tranny can handle?
Also are there any kits or mods to beef it up?

Contact Jan at RMW, Ralph at Helix, Chad at Detroit Tuned or maybe one of the Alta guys...any of them may be able to help you. The auto is somewhat limited as far as the mods go. It's engine sits higher and the transmission give some tuners fits...
....running great!
Even more interesting is the R56 thread. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...69#post1942569 The R56 has the same transmission and the JCW R56 has far more torque than our cars.
Hopefully someone with the dimsport can chime in if there is a torque limiter for first and second gear when the tranny uses a torque converter instead of a direct link. I seem to be running into some limiting factor when I floor it in first gear (DSC off). That could help prevent destroying the tranny with high power mods. Hopefully the (fictional?) torque limiter in the ECU could be tuned to closer to the torque limit of the tranny which is supposedly around 230 ftlb at the crank (200 at the wheels?)
The highest dyno of an automatic that I've seen is at about 166 ftlb and 195 whp. That was supposedly on a car with a pulley, head, cai, exhaust, and madness w/a intercooler.

Still haven't found a way to upgrade the transmission yet.
Hopefully, Checkers has dynoed his car on a chassis dyno recently as he has the most power mods on the auto that I've seen.
If the tranny doesn't seem to be failing on the modded R56 cars, a couple of years down the road, I'll think about the stroker.
Another person to call would be Way at WayMotorWorks who was in the process of tuning an automatic for maximum power.
