Sound Generator Removal For CAI Install

i know that there is a partial response to this question on another thread but it doesn't answer my question and i am not getting a responses from pm's. anyways i was wondering if anyone removed there sound generator to clear the cold air intake? i would like to remove it but does it leave a hole in the boost tube? do you need to plug it or do you leave the muffler? thanks for your inputs.

Don't see why you need to remove it...that will mess up other stuff. I have the Alta intake, no issues there.

I'm not directly answering your question, but I have some input. When I installed my Alta CAI, I had clearance issues with the new shroud and the sound generator. I chose not to remove the sound generator to attempt to keep the car closer to stock. I ended up shimming the firewall-side up 3/8" to remove the clearance issue. Apparently this is an issue on later '07 MCS.

When I inquired about the clearance issue, I received advice from Adam @ Alta suggesting that I use a plug to remove the sound generator to address the clearance issue.

Cheers,
Jeff

I took mine out, no difference really. I'd like to cap off the pipe and the valve thingy that lets air into it. Really stupid idea for bmw to put that on the car. At least its not like the 2.0t gtis, they have like 6 feet of piping for a turbo noise generator lol

Just received my CAI yesterday. Installed today, Alta's instructions were to remove the sound generator and included a Stainless steel plug to block off the tube. Did older Alta CAI instructions say not to do this? Maybe it's something new?

yeah i say it in the instructions but i didn't receive the plug. i got new instructions with old parts. this is what started the whole thread. anyways i just got a pm from adam and he said i should be fine without it since it was a problem with newer 07s/08s. thanks for your inputs!

Follow the sound generator tube from the firewall to the canister looking thing that is clipped to the intake manifold. This canister is what makes the "sound". It is sealed inside, no air goes thru it. Just loosen the hose clamp and remove the tube. That's it. If you want, you can remove the clamp at the throttle body boost tube, and get rid of the whole thing. The sound generator canister slides down into formed slots, it slides right up after the intake is removed. You will have to plug the tee in the throttle body boost tube, though. I have an ALTA throttle body boost tube, and machined an aluminum plug for it. I put the sound generator in my box of OEM parts.

I am with you on this one, I have seen it on mine but had no idea what it does. My first assumption was that it was the BOV but I now know that is on the turbo.

Look here: http://www.jscspeed.com/mini_r56/bov.htm

You need a standard BOV block off plug to cap it, should be 1.25" diameter.

It does nothing, but move air towards the firewall for increased in-car turbo sound (and it fills with methanol if you have meth injection & don't plug it, although I doubt that was Mini's intention).

Hmm...did anyone notice this in the jscspeed article?

Keep the ECU Happy: The R56 Mini's ECU doesn't seem to react poorly to having a vent-to-atmosphere BOV installed. It does, however, react badly to having the stock bypass valve removed. Therefore, while it is available, we suggest avoiding the Alta block-off plug for the time being, until some form of ECU tuning becomes available.

JSCSpeed is a seller of Alta stuff. Why would they say that? How does the ECU have problems with it. Alta, can you chime in?

First, I apologize that our website was incorrect.

The Alta BOP is designed to remove the stock bypass valve. This is different from a block-off plug, which removes the stock noisemaker. The stock bypass valve is attached to the turbo, the noisemaker is just before the throttle body on the intercooler pipes.

You do not want to use the block-off plate at this point, because it requires an aftermarket blow-off valve (otherwise the air does not escape from the system) and will throw a check engine light even w/ an aftermarket bov.

However, once ECU tuning for this specific product is available, you will be able to remove the stock bypass valve for complete boost control.

There is no hazard to blocking off the noisemaker.

This is the plug:

This is the plate:

Plug goes in the IC pipes to remove the noise maker, plate goes on the turbo to remove the stock electronically controlled bypass valve.

Anyone have any pics of where this is as the ones in the above link are kinda small ?

Where does it connect to on the engine side ?

Does it connect to this tube on the post intercooler section of the intake pipes (shown below) ?
If it does, ALTA, any reason why you kept the junction in the pipe as it would be smoother without ?

checked myself and it does indeed branch off from the pic I posted above.

Only question now is for ALTA regarding their upgraded pipe as it seems better to have deleted that from the upgrade pipe for better flow

Allows mount of the ALTA (an others I can assume) upgraded Blow - Off Valve. So removing the port would be a step back in this case!

Thanks for asking!

What are the dimensions for the plug for the hole left by the noise generator? I have an Alta CAI but i got an early one, i want to remove the sound generator. I can get a plug fabricated but i need to know how big i need to make it!

Ring your dealer and they can provide one to you. We can then send them one on their next order. Let me know if I can help further!

im going to rehash an older thread to ask another question relating to this. i installed the alta CIA 8 months ago and i left the noise generator connected, BUT since there is no clearance its disconnected from the firewall and kind of hanging there. thats all fine and sometimes i hear a rattling. my MAIN CONCERN or QUESTION is that it being disconnected from the firewall like that and just hanging, is there any possible danger to the turbo or engine from moisture or water or anything getting inside the open tube that should be connected to the firewall? any possible damage over time because of this?
