04 MCS Shifting Problems

2004 MCs. I can engage Reverse, 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears. Won't shift into 2nd, 4th or 6th. Same thing happens with the engine running or not.
I figure it must be a cable/linkage issue, but just wanted to find out if anyone has experienced the same problem and what was the fix.

Thanks!

Jim

Try pulling your intake box and you should be able to see where the cables attach to the linkage. One of them may have popped off of the snap on ball link. It should pop on and be drivable if you take it easy, but you will need to replace the whole cable to fix it. It costs about $100 and they will probably have to order it.

Fixed it! When you mentioned the intake box, I had to slap myself. Last week I installed a de-flapped JCW intake. There is a harness that lives under the box, and I had inadvertently pushed it down and back, where it eventually fouled the shift linkage. D'OH! I zip-tied the harness out of the way and now I have all of my gears back!

Thanks!

Jim

Was there a change in the shift cables/assembly on the 05-06 cars? I'm starting to get annoyed by excessive play and a notchy feel in my shifter. Might have to replace that if I keep my car...

Glad it helped you. I just had to have a cable replaced so I figured it was something in that area
