Going Catless

I've been thinking about fiting a test pipe or finding a catless downpipe for my race application. So far I have only seen catted downpipes. Is there anyone who has done this already or is also thinking about it? I'm am wondering for tuning purposes. I think the elimination of all back-pressure could double the amount power seen from the catted downpipes already on the market...especually with a bigger turbo.

I have been doing research and since they are located in my area I contacted Riss Racing. I got a call back from the Owner and he said he would be interested in making me a DP for my mini. They currently have released their dps for the BMW 335 and made 27 wheel hp and 49 wheel tq. After Vishnu tuned the DP they pulled 60 wheel HP! Check this out. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106330t=106355 Take a look at what im talking about if you havent head of them www.rissracing.com

I will keep you posted on the results.

Riss Racing's

mission is to dominate the euro-tuner market with the highest quality fabrication with unsurpassed customer service. We are going to create a product line that is affordable to our consumers without hindering the quality of the work. Too many large euro-tuning companies are out there to make the biggest margins because our cars are the definition of luxury and exotics. Our clients worked too hard to get where they are and own the cars that they own to pay for mediocre products with high prices.

....$1053...???

Well if you do more research you will realize there is TWO downpipes for that price. Since the bmw 335 is TWIN TURBO. And their current group buy price is going for 799. Which would mean its cheaper than the ALTA single DP, and you get two of them......

They seem to know what they are doing. They have no CEL on the 335 DP. They have also developed SIMs with tuners and things you can do to the DP like bung raisers to get around the CEL. They are very active on the e90post maybe I can get them to cross over here and give us other options for our MINIs.

Its an o2 spacer that may or may not work for curing the CEL. Its a really low tech solution so dont confuse it with any development whatsoever.

And its two like, two foot downpipes. How is this ANY bit of a deal for $1000??? I'm fine with aluminized steel exhaust! Why cant someone make a non bling bling setup?!?!?!

I think they did a really good job with the 335 - I mean 60WHP!!! That's with Vishnu tuning. I would gladly pay $1000 for that kind of power, but I would be in luck because I'd only have to pay $799 in the group buy. I'm excited to see what kind of power they can make with my Mini. I presented my concern with throwing a CEL and they told me that it shouldnt be an issue...I trust. I may meet with them tomorrow to discuss it further. I'll keep you posted.

You'd need proper tuning also, and the only ballgame in town is alta and I'm not sure they could do a catless tune remotely, would probably have to test in house. Depending on where you are I guess it would work?

Okay hold on. Thats 60whp gain with a PIGGYBACK ECU, INTAKE, CATBACK, AND CATLESS DOWNPIPES. Thats NOT a cheap group of parts!!! The downpipes making 27hp... I'm not so sure I believe that, but the 60whp is from a few expensive parts.

Have fun,
Josh

The O2 spacers are pretty hit and miss, mostly miss. We ended up making special simms for the 335i and will do the same when I get our MCS.

Rock on. Any pics or a description of the one you guys make for the 335? I'm curious, I had o2 sims (electrical) on my mustang, they didn't work, I ended up turning off the rear o2s anyway.

You have a lot of trust. "Shouldn't be an issue" is utterly meaningless. If your CEL comes on, tell that it shouldn't.

Good luck,

Joe

This is why I'm in taking a welding course now. I would like to make my own exhausts and parts and save money.

With the cel, its only a matter of time until someone can turn off the o2s with a reflash or a unichip or something like that.

I trust someone when they guarantee quality. Meaning if it does throw a CEL, they go back to the drawning board and make it so it doesn't. I trust a company who is the only company to successfully make 3" DP for a car with little or no space to work with. I trust a company who successfully makes the most power with a tuner like vishnu. I will happily pay for that kind of quality. You get what you pay for.

I am very excited to say that Riss will be making a DP for my Mini.

It's not a porshe 993 though...it's a BMW 335i. The last porsche 993 was in 1998. It's 2008, 10 years later. Basic supply and demand.

Ugh. Go do that. Its people like you that fuel Mini parts going up in price. Thanks!!!

(and no one else makes the downpipes because they're a ***** to install. For you, a lot of hours to pay)

And back to the original topic a cat does NOT provide that much backpressure in the system. you can talk to Alta about that, with a PROPER catalytic converter you would be hard pressed to see any meaningful gains between catted and catless, all things equal. (read: 3" vs 3") And you're inviting trouble if you're in a state that has inspections. Removing or tampering with catalytic converters and emission equipment is a felony.

Oh and up a few posts, you quoted yourself.... isn't that against the rules or something?

Are mini parts going up in price? NO. Altas DPs cost as much as they do because they have cats that run efficient (those are not cheap you know). If anything prices are going down!! You must not work on cars because DPs are one of the easiest things to install on a car...it's just time consuming. It may be illegal, but more than half the mods you can do to your car is illegal. You need an executive order from the state for every mod that you do to your car. You may pass smog, but that is not the only test you have to pass for your vehicle to be "legal". You must have the executive order. There is a part of the test called VISUAL. You also cannot tamper with any emission control devices (like your ecu). When they run the test for your registration they will hook a scan tool up to see if all monitors are up and running and it's up to standard OEM spec (That's why piggyback systems are the best! It's easy to uninstall) If I were you, I would keep your car stock if you have that concern because you will never "find the right mods". But if you do decide, you should pay the extra amount to get someone to install it (like me - cause it's soo difficult ugh). The bottom line = catless makes more power, especually with an upgraded turbo. With mods extensive as I plan, I am just going to burn through my cat anyways.

Cheap + Fast = unreliable. Reliable + Fast = not cheap (you get what you pay for)
