Howdy,

I picked up the July 2003 issue of Total BMW which had a special section on MINIs. It was excellent, BTW -- lots of large color images of the tuner's cars inside and out. They had all of the top Euro tuners listed: AC S, Hartge, JCW, and more. The tuners did ECU tweaks, pulleys, headers, exhausts, wheels, and suspension. But curiously absent was the air intake mod.

Why would none of the top Euro tuners put in a cold air intake, since it is such an easy bolt-on mod? It sure made me scratch my head. Any thoughts?

See ya,
JS

I've tested a couple of tuners already and you're right, most of them do not offer an intake. It doesn't appear as they are as popular/available at the moment. It seems the US has tapped in to this market much quicker. That's why I ordered a Madness intake to go along with the tuning option I will eventually decide on.

We have a sister Company in Germany and so we deal with this all the time

Why no German intakes?

The answer is simple the TUV ( German DOT) does not allow for intake systems with exposed filter areas.

You can not believe the rules and regultions that a product must pass before it recieves TUV Certification so you can drive on German Streets.

If you get pulled over and you are found to have modified your vehicle and you do not have TUV Certificates in your glove box from the Dekra, you are walking home!

For example: lets take exhuast system noise levels.

One test an exhuast must endure for TUV is a db test
Our Proprietary Cooper Exhuast System was fitted to a MIni and run on a Dyno with Microphone up its tail pipe and a reading was taken. We passed! Yeah! ; passed below the limits, then the exhuast system was deinstalled and installed on what we call the flame thrower. Fire was blown through the exhust system about one hour simulating about 100,000 miles of driving.
Again, noise levels can could not exceed that maximum and on to the next test etc...
Did I say these tests are very expensive?
No Refunds!!!!

This is why Exhuast systems like Super Sprint Hartge, GPower etc.... are so well made.

So you get what you pay for after all!
