Got beat by an old Galant (I think..)
It sounded like it was turbo charged because I kept hearing loud BOV noise.
From the stop light going into the 50 mph zone I was like a car length behind by the time we were ~60mph. It was fast. The road was slick with rain and my All season tires didn't have a good grip so I left the AST on but would I have been faster with manual gas pedal modulation with more experience than leaving it up to TC?

Neither of us was revving. Both were pretending to be sleepers. Then when the light turned both went for it. I always do when I am at the front of the line and there are no cops around. I was surprised that he did the same thing and I was surprised he was that fast. It could have been AWD but I don't know.
It was not as old as that in that picture above. It was a 90's model.

I don't look over to the car next to me. I avoid eye contact as well because I don't mean to race the other car. I just take off aggressively. When there is no one around I turn my AST off and peel the rubbers sometimes.

How else are you gonna find out? But, speaking as someone who has raced legally and illegally, its better when there's an ambulance around.
There are a lot of DSM and Chrysler cars running around with high horsepower thanks to the aftermarket. I have an acquaintance with a 300+ hp 1st gen eclipse. Scary car. I have seen video of a Caravan minivan that cuts mid-10s. If the car you are up against came equipped with an engine that had a turbo in any of its applications, all bets are off, because it's probably pretty cheap to modify. Don't assume that colt vista in the next lane is gonna be a pushover.

True - lessons I've learned:
1) A twin-turbo Maserati sedan from the mid-eighties is a fast car hidden behind an ugly, generic exterior, and
2) A Super-Duty 455c.i. Trans Am doesn't look very different from any other early-70's TA.

Probably a `91 VR4 AWD turbo....
That Galant could have had one of these turbo upgrades.

It was early in the morning and dark. All I saw was the tail lights while busy shifting. I stared at it wondering wth???

I'm so glad the forum police are around to make sure we all know it's perfectly legal and safe to briskly accelerate from a stop light
no where was this said to be a street race
if I am the first at a light, my foot is to the floor, ASC keeps my wheels in check, EVERY SINGLE LIGHT, as far as I know it's not breaking the law, I'm not racing anyone, just like the OP in this thread

^Yeah, I agree. I don't consider going from 0-60 in a 50 mph zone racing. Yeah, 10mph over the speed limit is speeding. But, how many cops are gonna give you crap over that? It must be a fairly wide open area for there to be a 50 mph limit. You'd have to be looking pretty hard to see the difference between 50 and 60 without a gun.

great first post. unless you're hiding behind a new screen name you might want to read the forum guidelines (along with the OP).
How do you get beat if it isn't a race?

I'm trying very hard to lighten up when it comes to moderating what appears to be "displays of speed". The community as a whole doesn't like to see these kind of things and are letting the poster know it when he/she posts. Given this I feel that the thread self-moderates based on the feedback from the members. Like most of speed-related threads this one has gone on to talk about the other car...which I think is a perfectly good topic for discussion.
For now, no need to lock/remove the thread, or issue any kind of penalties...the general MINI community has spoken about the issue and I think that this is sufficient.

My friend has a 1975 Triumph TR6. Originally it came to the states with about 106 hp. He has modified the engine a bit and now it has multi-port fuel injection, supercharged, and intercooled, as well as a few other modifications. It is rather fast and has been clocked from 0-60 in under 4 seconds(in a 65mph zone). His dyno runs were good for about 200hp at the wheels. Follow the link in my signature and you can see pictures of his car. It is scary fast.
