Clutch Discs

Does anyone know what the difference is between the cooper and cooper s clutches. I checked real OEM, and they shows the same disc, but forgot to check to the presureplate. But according to retailers, s clutches wont fit on a cooper. Why is this, what is the differnce? thanks alot

I am not sure of the differences in the clutch discs and pressure plates, but I am assuming the pressure plate for the S has a higher clamping force than the one for the Cooper.

thanks for info mybro i figured as much.
I also just suddently remembered that the cooper has a sprung disc and unsprung clutch, while the s has a dual mass flywheel and unsprung clutch and disc. If i remember right anyway. But other than that, if i went with an aftermarket clutch, could i use one desigend for the s in the cooper. Are the input splines differnt? I dont think the clutch itself would really care, but the disc certainly would! Basically what i want to do is put a cooper flywheel on with a clutch designed for the s. (cooper flywheel is lighter). Is the diameter of the clutch disc different or something?

thanks

I am not sure about diameter, but it wouldnt surprise me if they were. I believe the transmission for the S is mae by Gertrag and I cant for the life of me remember which company produced the Cooper 5 spd. transmission. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, hopefully somebody who knows a little more than me about the subject will chime in soon.

Midlands made the MC tranny.

This would be a good thing to check at your local dealers parts dept. Ask them to bring the clutch, flywheel and throwout bearing for both an MC and MCS to the counter. Then look at them both and see if anything jumps out to say no, then measure. Might want to explain to parts guy what you are doing too.

Yes it is the difference between those clutchs. The Cooper has spring hub and the S has unspring hub because has twinmass flywheel.

I hope I help you.

gnatster, you have alot of faith in my parts department! hahaha, To bad my friend that replaced his left it all in houston when he swaped his out for aftermarket, then i could have just looked at his. I guess it is going to have to come down to trying to find one of each, or just pulling mine and borrowing an old one.

Thanks for the help everyone
