Transmission Problems: HELP NEEDED

Ok, so on my way to school today I got scared shytless. I was shifting into 2nd (from 1st) at about 6000-6200 RPMs and mis-shifted (I know I know, but I've been complaining about my tranny for a while now). It grinded the worst I have ever heard, super LOUD, and I immediately thought my transmission was blown. I put it into 2nd gear and NOTHING, wouldn't engage. I slowed down enough for 1st and put it into gear, phew, 1st gear works. I tried double clutching into 2nd to see if it would help, NOTHING. 3rd-6th work as well and so does Reverse. 2nd gear, however, seems to be gone. I think I might have blown the synchros but I'm really not sure what happened. Any inputs/suggestions.

Also, is it possible to just rebuild the 2nd gear or anything that might be broken and how much does this normally cost?

Also x2, what flywheel/clutch upgrades do you recommend for the street. It NEEDS to be streetable, just looking to lose a couple pounds off the flywheel and a better clutch if I'm going to be messing around with the transmission anyways...

Anyone have an 05-06 Tranny with the Factory LSD for sale, CHEAP?

Hey it sounds like you blew the syncro for 2nd. gear. Yes it can be done if you have a cool parts guy who can order just that part. Do not let them tell you that you have to buy the whole tranny! Also, if you want to replace your clutch and flywheel give Jan a call at www.revolutionmini.com he's a great guy and he sell Clutchmasters dirt cheap go with the FX-300

Yeah man...it sounds like your syncho's went south. I have done what you have a few times but I catch it early enough to push the clutch in and let the rev limiter catch the over-rev. Sucks.... There is a dood selling a UUC flywheel on ebay for like 2-300 bucks. I would go with a LTW flywheel and a good sticky clutch.... I don't know what to tell you about the synchro but if you cant get the individual part..let me know and I will see what I can do....

Mini does not supply trans parts for the 6 speed good parts man or not. They don't even have a way to look the stuff up.

Don't know if Quaife has them out yet, but they were going to make some gear sets for the Getrag (close ratio and Group N, I think).

Look around for a used one w/LSD.

Check this guy http://www.lkqcorp.com/home/home.asp

Last time they have one from the '06 w/ LSD.

Thanks for the input guys. I am looking at the FX300 for a clutch and the UUC Flywheel. What are your opinions for a flywheel?? More importantly though, anyone know where I can source some synchros?? As that is my primary concern right now..

Call a good local tranny shop - if you take your box apart, it's likely that they will be able to find something that should work.

You'll need a new 2nd gear as you've stripped/ground all the dog teeth off the gear! The selector hub may be hooped too! Hopefully Quaife and others will offer us gears/synchros and hubs/main shafts/lay gears/lay shafts/selector forks etc in the near future. Good luck to you!

I think that may be your clutch? I haven't even called the dealer as several have said they don't sell individual transmission parts. I'm trying to source them elsewhere, hoping someone has a spare parts tranny.

P.S. - What flywheel is it that everyone matches up their Clutchmasters Clutches with? Has anyone experienced any sort of clutch chatter with this setup? How about flywheel noise? I definitely don't want to be dealing with that...

There is no part number for transmission internals, MINI does not sell just internals. I'm still trying to source a 2nd gear synchro for my tranny. I'll let you know if I find anything.

If it is only 2nd gear, does it grind at all when going into gear, does it go into gear but pop out, or simply does nothing (as if though you were going into neutral). After talking to a couple mechanics about my own problem, I think your's may be the failed synchro as well. If so, you'll likely need to replace your tranny..

I found this site today, contact them to see if all Getrag 6-speed variations use the same syncros.

I got quoted $500 of labor for a tranny swap at an acquaintances shop. Good or too much? All mini-specific shops I called were quoting me over $850 for labor...

email received from supercar-engineering. they have no getrag synchros

ya'll probably know this, but i just discovered last night that the R53 shares the same Getrag 285 tranny with the Ford Focus SVT. i'm gonna try searching for the getrag synchros for the SVT, see if something comes up
