Metal in Intercooler TB side??!!??

Durring an inspection of a possible boost leak i discovered bits of flexible metal caught by the fins of the IC. Also i been noticing that the SC has been alot louder. since like a racket of noises. Im actually shy 2.5 lbs of boost according to the sea level concensus. Im starting to believe the noises and boost loss are comming from the vanes getting mangled. Anyone else have a take on this??

thx in advance,
Josh

I found some grey/silver plasticy stuff in mine, runied my IC.

Never really found out what it was. I thought it was SC coating but others said no - they thought it was one of the plastic tags found in the engine comparment but I can imagine that I was that careless. The car had been to the dealer and they had removed the IC.

I did lose some pressure - assuming my guage remained accurate.

just make sure your IC is not clogged - I ran pressurized water thru it but could not get all the stuff out.

I haven't seen any metal in one before, but it seems very possible that if the bearings &/or gears started to go & resulted in enough play that you could start shaving some metal. That would be really bad news to the IC and engine overall... if you've lost boost at the same time, I'd pull the s/c and investigate (or take it to the dealer if you've still got a warranty).

Speaking of s/c whine, I recently adjusted my BPV to close fully (stock had it pretty far from closing on mine) and changed my IC, and I got a whole lot more s/c whine at low boost levels now, although high boost still sounds about the same.

on the positive side

when i removed it i did spray the inside of the ic with wd-40 to degrease then soaked it in really hot water and dishsoap and flushed out all the oil. Its much more responsive in hot weather and from the stop. This weekend im going to zip tie the bypass to be sure its not acting up. Ill order some new IC boots as well. Lastly i have a warranty on all my aftermarket since i bought it used with it all and was worried at sale time about issues. $200 deductible but well worth it if it means new SC. I thought the stuff may have been grey plastic fut it flexed/bends like a metal shaving. My noise is not SC whine more like a unbalanced racket if you will. How involved past IC removal is looking inside the SC itself. (Hand tools in a regular house garage?

Here’s a thread with an overview on removing the supercharger and a link to more detailed instructions. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=110530

A preliminary glimpse can be had when the supercharger intake is removed but for a thorough inspection, complete SC removal is preferred.

This description reminds me of how I've heard people describe a failing crankshaft harmonic damper...

Ya WD-40 if you ever noticed will rid a squeek but later it will come back. Crankshaft thing is scarry! I work on copiers as my Job and now that I think of it the noise kinda sounds like when bearings are worn in the fuser unit (The part that melts the toner to the paper). I havent looked at that link but im about to after this post.

Sounds like your SC bearings might be shot. Do you have a reduction pulley on?

Ya the car was bought used with:
-15% reduction and stock sized crank but lighter pulleys (both alta)
-Full miltek exhaust (headers-cat-exhaust).
-alta diverter and boots

and some other stuff irrelivant. I was conceredned about a used modified boosted car I knew nothing about so I made sure i had some sort of warranty although its $200 deductible. So basicly i have two waranty issues now.

- SC issue as mentioned
- Miltek cat failing (SES light)

I was thinking of finding a shop to do it however i have three choices so far.

1.) Dealer: I may catch some flak but in the end the warranty was intended for this pujrpose and i have added nothing to the car it didnt already have.

2.) Tuner shop near me who specializes in Ol school minis (They have a twin engined mini making 1200hp off 2 b18 engines) However the new minis are new territory but they have a intrest in getting into them. Dyno avail as well.

3.) Tuner/Racer who works at a mini dealer in Tampa 4 hours away. My first choice as hes damn good. However he hasnt returned my call or internet inquiry. I hope its not cause he works with the dealer and it makes it iffy.

I may have to go with 2 as they have no attachments to the dealer but they may not know enough about new mini?
Also id like to get possibly 2% crank in there at same time and mabye a new head.

However you decide to get it fixed, I'd do it soon! If those bits of metal make it past the IC and into the head or block you are looking at some major problems.

Be sure to post the source of the problem if your mechanic manages to fix it!

If your sc is failing

it may be repairable. Contact http://www.stiegemeier.com/ SOON. IF the bearings go and the SC eats itself, you'll need a whole new one. Also, you'll find that they have a lot of other services other than just rebuilding.... Endyn does stuff as well, and they're good, but it takes a while to get work through them....

Thanks all for your support. I am going to get on the horn with my local tuner to check it out im sure he will need a tensioner tool so i may pick one up and let him use it so i can do my own belt maint in the future. I will be for sure ordering new alta boots as mine are worn and posibly the Det tuning bypass or the reworked one my contact in tampa sells same thing as far as i can tell probably diffrent spring rates.
I will definitely be posting updates. And of course all posts are useless without pictures so i will be sure to post those as well.
If it's an option to use the diffrence to convert to turbo only id even toss that up in the air but really im looking for 250 whp 200tq tops when all modding is done if theres such a thing. If im lucky ill get you a pic of some of the beasts that come in like the rotary engine attached to a roll cage and hoosiers or that 1200hp twin engine ol skool mini.

Ill keep ya posted thx again.
