Is Airbox Removal Required

After reading the pulley swap instructions from Randy Webb, I was wondering do you really need to remove the airbox and ECU??? It seems that if you remove the air intake hose the engine will have enough space to travel.

The box is easy enough to remove and Randy's instructions are excellent and proven easy to follow.

The airbox doesn't need to come out to do a pulley. You'll just be making more work for yourself.

I didnt remove more then half the stuff people say you need to. mine went on in 3 hours for my first install. but I had a lift, and ALL the proper tools to do the job right. I think thats the most important thing.

No you don't have to touch anything involving the intake. Undo the bolts, lift, remove the pulley, slide the new one back on and tighten, then release the engine, and bolt it back up.

So both Randy and Alta take off the airbox for giggles?

I'm not exactly sure why they do it. I can't seem to find the logic behind removing the airbox assembly, then going to the opposite side of the car to change the pulley.

Try to do it sometime without taking the airboxs out. It makes it 108927345098247508724 times easier. you remove it so its easier to move the engine around.

I did mine without taking the airbox out. I also didn't want to move the engine "around", I just wanted to raise it to get the puller in there.

I removed mine to improve visibility around the engine. It's a good opportunity to take a look around the engine, too. At least, removing it bears the same reason as having a second person there: just 'cuz.

I've done seven pully installs so far, and I have it down to about 90 minutes, including removing the airbox. Maybe I'm raising the engine up further than other people, but I can't imagine doing it with the airbox in place. It's so easy to remove the airbox, and it gives you one less potential source of binding while raising the engine, that I would suggest removing it unless you've got some compelling reason *not* to.

Take it out and put a CAI in there. Two birds with one stone!

I've done one or two pulley installs as well, and here's why it should be removed: If you don't remove the airbox, you risk breaking the rear mounting bushing flanges on the bottom of the airbox. When you push up the motor the rubber bushings tweak the flanges and they break. They are very fragile, and whereas it isn't the end of the world if they break, why break them if you don't have to? Once you get the hang of it, removing the airbox will add a full 60 seconds to your job. You got a minute to spare?
