intake question

I'm looking to get myself an intake after the next set of mods and I was wondering if anybody had any opinions on a K&N Typhoon intake?
I wanted to know how much power i'll get from it and if there are any others out there that are better. Somebody told me about 10 hp and 8lb/ft which is okay with me i just want to know if theyre accurate.

One more thing, does anybody have a recommendation for good spark plugs, colder then stock? I'm doing the GIAC flash w/17% pulley but i was just told that i also need colder plugs. Anybody know?
thanks
Happy Motoring

If your not set on the K&N, there are other intakes out there. The Alta, Webb, or DDM are all good intakes that are made specifically by MINI companies for the MINI. 10 hp may be stretching it a little but nearly all intakes for the MINI produce about the same gains.

As for colder plugs, you are going to need to step up to IK22's with a 17% pulley. NGK is usually the recommended brand.

I think the more realistic power gain would be around 3-5 whp max if that.

I had the K&N a while back and sold it. Take a look at the design of it and think of heat problems it may have.

^ +1 -- But none of them will give you 10hp (the somebody who told you that about the K&N must be the same one trying to sell it to you )

Go with the Dinan. I like it more than the Alta CAI I had.

I'm not sure about the plugs. If anything, NAPA would have them. sparkplugs.com is usually the cheapest place you'll find.

As for the M7 intake, they discontinued it due to production costs. You can sometimes find them for sale but version 1 and 2 of the intake had air leak issues. I've heard M7 is working on a new intake but I really don't know anything about it. A while back, there was an intake shootout and the the M7 intake didn't have any gains compared to the others and the install is MUCH more complicated than other intakes.

for cheap thrills get the bmp/promini one. i just picked up a used one for $60 and it's pretty good bang for the buck. sounds great and throttle response is better. they claim 12hp increase and while i don't really believe that, the car does feel peppier

BTW: Do you mean the M7 DDM or the M7 AGS? DDM is fine, the AGS is no longer made due to high production cost and PITA to install plus leaky. But also did get rated the highest HP and loud SC whine like a screaming banshee. I might have a M7/DDM for sale soon, I am trying to put together an AGS piece by piece til I have a complete kit. Plus I will have my MINI in Newburgh, NY (orange County)

As for horsepower gains they are ALL about the same gains to be made (Not too much btw like 1-3hp) by all the ones mentioned other than AGS which is a few more ponies.

It seems as though that the leaking has been a problem with the AGS system which I belive it was one of the reasons why the unit was discontinued.

Well according to Jan from Revolution Mini after seeing my dyno chart I am pulling timing at 2 different (6200-6800) rpms. The car put down 206 SAE whp with bad timing at those 2 different spots. With corrected timing the car should be close to 220 however, something that I am planning for Jan and Danny at Minicorsa to do with my car when I drive down there in the next few weeks.

But of course 220 is just the start and that's without my current mods that are to be done on the car next week and others that Jan will do later this month. All exciting times. I am shooting for 240 if I'm lucky with proper tunes/modding parts.
