How a custom exhaust works?

I want to change my exhaust in my 06 MCS! I have made a lot of things custom for my Mini and I was considering a custom exhaust. I want to get rid of everything after the headers and the catalytic. What would happen if I would put a strait pipe from the catalytic to a muffler and then to the back of the car. Would the car still backfire (like shoot air out from the exhaust)? Would it be very loud without any silencers. Here is a crapy diagram made on paint:

Thanks, Rat48

Will it still burble(backfire)? HECK YEA!!!
Will it be loud? Definitely!

what you have drawn up is just a single sided exhaust and quite a few companies manufacture these for the mcs (alta, mymini just to name a few)

IMHO, if i were going to go full custom, id do a battery box delete and fab a full 2.5" straightback exhaust.......and it would probably deafen my hearing after a few months of hard driving.

lol, I would probably put a silencer in there somewhere because I do not want it to be extremely loud!

Thanks, Rat48
this deisgn won't work because of the muiffler hanging behind the battery box, there is not enough space of it. if it is simple straight pipe without the box, its cool.

sprp85, good eye, that didnt even dawn on me......

did you do a battery box delete when you did your 3" custom?
what are your thoughts on it with daily street use and driveability?

Im on the verge of pulling the trigger on the batt box delete myself, any info is appreciated.

WOW! Do you have some audio clips of how loud it is?

The diagram above is not %100 accurate because the muffler would be on the side so the battery would remain untouched.

TonyB, that is beautiful......you read my mind!!!

What diameter of tubing did u use? im thinking of stayin stock size 2.25" but wondering if 2.5" would be of any benefit on a custom straightback, im thinkin prob not cuz there should be less turbulance already with the minimal amount of bends.....thoughts?

You in CA? what shop did you use?

now i really want to do a custom straightback!!!

Sorry, no audio clips. I get a request seemingly once a week, but have been unable to do so... Not overly loud, especially with the rear seats in place. Some have said no louder than a Magnaflow. The finished version has a resonator as I went with a SuperSprint center pipe (2.5") w/ resonator. The muffler is a Borla Turbo which is about 100 bucks at Summit Racing.

Just needed to weld a 2.5" extension onto the SS center pipe to take it to the tunnel exit. There is mates-up to the muffer. I needed to pay for the welding of some hangers also. Total was like 20 or bucks for weld work. I removed the box myself, and fab'd a cover for it. I think I have a shot or two in my gallery of the battery situation. Not exactly current, but good enough to get the idea...

I'm in the San Jose area. There have been a few threads here on this topic. Might want to try a search. At least one or two others have done the same recently. One guy (I think Rick) went 3". I chronicled my experiences over on MINI2. Just do a search there, and that should yield a fair amount, including part numbers and measurements, etc.

This is a really nice job! Is there any problems with sensors or things like that? Do you have any idea on how much hp you might gain with an exhaust like that? And how do dealers and warranty work with custom mods like this assuming nothing goes wrong because of them. Thanks for the info!

And where can you buy a 2.5 inch silencer???

Thanks!

Cool!!

But, for the rest of us.... uh, where are you putting the battery when you delete the box?

Edit: Oh, I see. Interesting, but do you have an adequately vented protective cover over it? You really shouldn't have an exposed battery in the passenger compartment.

Hey Rat.....do a search on custom 3" exhaust that I did. If your decent at welding and fabing stuff up it will do exactly what you want it too. I cant not be any happier. I can also let you know where to get all the piping, muffler, resonator, cat and the such for the least amount of loot.....

I will conduct a search for the 3" exhaust to find out more. I would appreciate if you can tell me where to find some things. I found a Borla Turbo exhaust for around $119.99! I would also like a 2.5" silencer somewhere in there so it would not be that loud, but not to quiet.

Thanks!
