Ok, done deal. It's all good. It's nice and audible now. It's nowhere near the Borla in terms of volume and deep pitch. But it just took the old sound and made it a little angrier. Oh, it gurgles a lot!! Even when I'm changing gears! Good thing I like it.

Glad you like it - "a little angrier" is a good description. I love mine.

A lot of these sounds clips really don't do a good job of capturing the real tone of any of these exhausts. I just don't think the camera / camcorder microphones do well at low frequencies. Cause I know mine has all the tones I hear in your video, but it also has a range of lower tone that balances it out. I suspect yours does too, it just doesn't translate well to video clips...

Ok, one-ball is a success. We're entering stage 2 of this operation.

It just so happens that one of my cycling buds is the man at Dinan!

Wham! Detailed reports to follow!!

Some possible reasons for "2 *****".
Because it was built in England.
Balance is better than imbalance
To keep the family of the muffler making subcontractor well fed.
Because it just had to be different from the better designed MC exhaust
Two ***** suggests two tail pipes- what a farce!
Because the exhaust system engineer got too close to the exhaust fumes
Because the battery box got in the way and the one large ball split like a flatworm dividing and formed into a pair of *****.
Because it wasn't heavy and bulky enough as a one sided system
To keep the noise down and "muffle" our fun.
To cripple the power and increase back pressure so that more JCW kits or GP MINIs could be sold.
Because if the stock MINI had an exhaust like the JCW exhaust we'd all would have thought twice before modding our exhausts.

These are awesome!!!! Here's my theory this morning:

- Because if they had one-ball, they might have room for a spare tire. But then they wouldn't be able to require those high-margin run-flat tires. And they wouldn't need that Flat tire sensor that they just spec'ed. And this one time at band camp

I just got a cat-back and when I picked up the stock muffler(s) I was horrified at how heavy they were. I'd say the one-ball would be worth it just for the weight savings.

Does shorter piping have anything to do with the louder sound?

Great video and info on the one ball mod. Does anyone know how much power gain if any there is? I like the price compared to a new cat back system.

It gets the often quoted '3-4' hp. Maybe a little more if you have other mods like the pulley and CAI, since the system has less back pressure.

I'd say 3-4 max. The piping is still 2.25''. IMO, half of the power from an exhaust is SOTP.

I've got the one ball mod as well and am looking for some inexpensive tips that look cool. Have you got any closer pics? How much did your tips run and where did you get them?

Here's my tip solution - Thermal R&D 3246A:

Not very inexpensive (aka a bit expensive) and not plug&play, but verrrrry nice. Full writeup is on my blog.
