Newbee for DE
Newbee for DE
I want to buy a 2006 base MINI for DE in the Chicago area (Road America, Autobahn, etc.). I will also use it soem as a street car, and I don't want to go racing, just drive fast and have fun in DE. I like the concept of having a new car with a warranty to do track days. Besides upgraded wheels and tires, what mods are needed to have "fun" and drive the car hard? Is this car a good choice to do DE's?
Thanks in advance for any experience and advise. I look forward to having fun in 2007!

You don't need much....
the car is already more than most can use.
I'd get some camber plates for the front, a rear bar as well. These two will allow you to dial out the understeer that's present in the stock suspension.
For brakes, I'd do some pads, better fluid and metal caliper bushings. This will take the stock brakes to a point where they can take the abuse of DEs, but as you get better or you go to more aggressive driving events you may find you need an aftermarket BBK. Don't spend the $ until you're getting fade from whatever you run.
For power, standard stuff applies. Intake, exhaust, header, head, cam etc etc etc.... But if you just do the suspension and brakes, I think you'll find that the car is competative with those having a lot more power.

Hi From the suburbs
Sounds about my weekend plans for the MINI that and meets. Who do you drive with (NASA, SCCA, Tri-State, all the above)? Tri state has some limits with mods unless you want to start adding safety equipment in a hurry. Still check out NASA and SCCA rules regarding any mods you may want to do. Basically keep things in good shape (fresh brake fluid @ least twice in the seaon or DOT 5 instead of the dot 4, and fresh oil, coolant, etc) and you can dot he lower level DEs without much hassle if you don't already have one get a good helmet too.
I've done some weight reduction and added a fire extinguisher and an intake.
These cars a a blast out of the box, you can go and have fun at a track (esp tight ones like blackhawk) on a completely stock car. When you do tune things like sway bars wheels intakes exhausts are the most common and pulleies for the S's. Again see what it does for any classes you'd worry about and what you need for safety equipment.
Other than that pretty much set it up to have fun, still haven't worked out my schedule for this season yet I'm doing as many as I can afford to as a college student. I'm sure a few others will chime in there are a handful of regulars in MINIs at the track.
If you've got anymore questions feel free to ask away!

best thing you can buy are brakes, stock pads and fuilds will not tolerate repeated abuse. there are a ton of threads on this so I'll keep this short
Fluid:
Motul rf600
ATE super blue
Pads:
Mintex 1144
Hawk HP+
ferrodo ds2500's
You don't need a BBK, pads and fluid will be plenty to keep you safe at the track. The only this else you might want is better tires (hankook rs2's and azenis rt-615's work great for streetable rubber). Other than that have fun and be prepared to learn a lot.
