Newbie -- getting brave

Hi all--
I've looked thru numerous threads and found a ton of info that I'm trying to sort thru and prioritze. Basically, I'm a new owner (6mos) and would like to go to a driving school and learn how to better handle my car. I'm finding that lately I'm braver with this thing than my experience should let me be. (More u-know-what than brains!) A friend has told me about some state races that he goes to where there are mini's. I'd like to try racing, but I know I need educating first. Where do I start to look - Wicks isn't coming around down here (SC), but someone mentioned BMW? Helmets - 2005SA? Flyin Hawaiin - I've saved your post for future reference.

Can someone please point me in a direction on schools, and tell me what to expect when I go to class? Also, tell me what the beginners' biggest thing to avoid is? I don't want to be the one on the track that everybody thinks needs training wheels!

I really push the BMWCCA, as I think they have the best and safest Driver's Eds (DEs). Don't even think about racing until at least a year of many (10-15) DEs. Depending on your natural skills, it may take a few years to get there. You might even find that DEs will fulfill your passions of wanting to drive fast on a track.
All types show up to BMWCCA DEs, so don't feel that you need to be a really good driver to go to them. They run in four groups, divided by skill levels.
Go for it, you'll love it.

Added this. When you visit http://www.bmwcca.org , go to the "Chapter Finder" link and look for a chapter(s) near you. If your near Lexington SC then your in luck.

I agree... try DE's first and work your way up through them.

And remember, turning a car into a money pit, errrrr, race car means big $ and lots of time...
