off camera microphone for in car camera
off camera microphone for in car camera
I've been using a mini-dv camera mounted in my car for track day videos. The video has worked out just fine, but the audio could use some help. There's too much wind noise and not enough engine / exhaust noise. My camera has a 1/8" mini jack for an external microphone. Has anyone used an external mic? If so, what kind, where was it mounted, etc... I'm looking for better sound without spending tons of money. I'm not looking for perfect sound.
Also, I need it to be safe and pass tech. I've currently got a rollbar which may offer some additional mounting possibilities.

Try using an external mic from something like an old Walkman or similar - this should already have the 3.5mm jack to fit your cam corder. Mount the mic in your air-intake box with a foam sock tied securely around it to minimise wind noise. Pass the cable through the firewall utilising one of the existing grommets which protect the wiring loom (you should be able to squeeze through with the loom). Then route the cable through the cabin to your camera.
I have a friend who used this method and even though he only used a cheap mic, the sound was awesome with a nice engine note and plenty of supercharger whine
The key is to get the mic into the airbox for the best sound!
